The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) announced today that John Lithgow will be performing his theatrical memoir Stories By Heart to benefit the A.R.T. on Monday, May 2 at 7:30pm at the Loeb Drama Center, 64 Brattle Street, Cambridge.

Tony, Emmy, and Golden Globe Award-winner John Lithgow offers a touching and humorous reflection on storytelling as the tie that binds humanity in Stories By Heart. He traces his roots as an actor and storyteller, interspersing his own stories with two classic short stories that were read to him when he was a child. Lithgow imparts the wonder and joy he felt when he first heard Wodehouse's "Uncle Fred Flits By" (1935), a funny story about a nephew taken on an afternoon's
escapade by his mischievous uncle, and Lardner's "Haircut" (1925), a darkly comic tale told by the local barber about a small-town practical joker who gets his due. Stories By Heart was performed at Lincoln Center in New York in 2008, the Lytlleton Theater in London in 2009, and opened the Mark Taper Forum season in Los Angeles this January, drawing enthusiastic reviews and audiences at all three venues.

John Lithgow's extensive Broadway credits include, among others, The Changing Room, Requiem for a Heavyweight, Division Street, Beyond Therapy, and M. Butterfly, and the musicals Sweet Smell of Success and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. He has appeared in over thirty films
including The World According to Garp and Terms of Endearment (Oscar nominations for both), All That Jazz, Blow Out, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Ricochet, and Cliffhanger. He has won two Tony Awards (out of three nominations), Five Emmys (our of eleven nominations), four Grammy nominations, and two Oscar nominations. He also received three Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for his work on the hit NBC comedy series 3rd Rock from the Sun. This year he won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy for his work on Showtime's Dexter. He
is the author of eight New York Times best-selling children's picture books. During his undergraduate years at Harvard University, Mr. Lithgow was a member of the Harvard Radcliffe Dramatic Club and appeared numerous times on the Loeb Drama Center stage. Designated
Master of the Arts at Harvard, Lithgow is one of the co-founder of ARTS FIRST, Harvard's annual festival of the arts, and has also served on the Harvard Board of Overseers. He received a Doctor of Arts Honorary Degree from Harvard in 2005.

Tickets for the event are $75, $125, and $250 and include a tax-deductable contribution to the A.R.T. All ticket holders will receive a complimentary beverage at intermission. All $250 ticket
holders will be invited to a special post-performance reception with John Lithgow.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.americanrepertorytheater.org and by phone at 617-547-8300.

ABOUT THE American Repertory THEATER

The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) is one of the country's most celebrated resident theaters and the winner of numerous awards-including the Tony Award, the Pulitzer Prize and regional
Elliot Norton and I.R.N.E. Awards. In 2002 the A.R.T. was the recipient of the National Theatre Conference's Outstanding Achievement Award, and in May of 2003 it was named one of the top three regional theaters in the country by Time magazine.

Founded by Robert Brustein in 1980, the A.R.T. during its 30-year history has welcomed many major American and international theater artists, presenting a diverse repertoire that includes new American plays, bold reinterpretations of classical texts and provocative new music Theater Productions. The A.R.T. has performed throughout the U.S. and worldwide in 21 cities in 16 countries on 4 continents. It has presented over 200 productions, over half of which were premieres of new plays, translations and adaptations.

The A.R.T. is also a training ground for young artists. The Theater's artistic staff teaches undergraduate classes in acting, directing, dramatic literature, dramaturgy, design and playwriting at Harvard University, and in 1987 the A.R.T. founded the Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University in conjunction with the Moscow Art Theater School. The Institute provides world-class graduate level training in acting, dramaturgy and voice.

In 2009, the A.R.T. welcomed its new Artistic Director, Diane Paulus. Armed with the A.R.T.'s mission to expand the boundaries of theater, Paulus and her team have engaged thousands of new theatergoers at

The Theater has broadened its focus to include the audience's total experience, providing them with a sense of ownership in the theatrical event. Initiatives like the A.R.T.'s new club theater OBERON, which Paulus calls a "Second Stage for the 21st century", is an example of one initiative that has not only become an incubator for local artists but also has attracted national attention as a groundbreaking model for programming.

Through all of its work, the A.R.T. is committed to building a community of artists, designers, technicians, administrators and audience.
