Fishburne going back to Broadway Actor to star in one-man show, 'Thurgood'
By GORDON COX
Laurence Fishburne heads back to Broadway this spring in "Thurgood," a one-man show about the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
Thesp was last on Broadway in a 1999 Roundabout production of "The Lion in Winter." He picked up a 1992 Tony for his role in August Wilson's "Two Trains Running."
"Thurgood" preemed in spring 2006 at the Westport Country Playhouse, with James Earl Jones in the lead. That production, which had been tipped to be eyeing Gotham, was directed by Leonard Foglia ("On Golden Pond"), who will helm the Broadway incarnation.
Written by screen producer, director and scribe George Stevens Jr., "Thurgood" offers a biographical account of Marshall, including his Baltimore upbringing and his stint as chief counsel of the NAACP, during which time he argued the landmark Brown v. Board of Education desegregation case in 1954. Marshall, appointed to the Supreme Court in 1967, died in 1993.
Ostar Prods. will produce the limited engagement of "Thurgood" in association with Westport Country Playhouse.
Show is set to begin previews at the Booth Theater on March 30 for an April 20 opening. "Thurgood" will move into the venue following the limited engagement of "The Seafarer," which will now begin previews on Oct. 30, a day earlier than originally planned. Thurgood
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.
Oddly, this is the first indication I've seen that The Seafarer is a "limited engagement". Over at broadway.com it says they are selling Seafarer tix through June! Hmmmmm....
I think it would be so weird to be in a one-person show. Like, you have no one to help you warm up, or anything, you don't taklk to the other actors. It's just you and the crew.
madlilbrarian, there's TONS of "LIMITED ENGAGEMENT" signs all over The Booth theatre regarding The Seafarer. it was common knowledge that the show wasn't open ended
i'm looking forward to this. I love Laurence Fishburne and was so sad that I couldn't make it to see him work again with Angela Basset in Fences. They are truly a dynamic acting duo. Wish they were married sometimes. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing this show. I hope it's not just Separate but Equal with one man playing all the roles.
Going to a musical late in its run is like going to a prostitute late in her shift.
Well, excuuuuse me for being four hundred miles away from the Booth Theater today! Nevertheless, The Seafarer is still listed as open-ended on both Playbill's and Talkin' Broadway's site listings.
This is THE season to watch plays on Broadway. I have yet to be as excited about ONE musical of the season as I am about five or more plays that are opening (or have opened) this season.
