A friend and I were thinking of our top ten favorite scores (not shows) and found that there were very few modern scores (post 1970) that we would include in our top ten. In our opinion, they just don't make them like they used to! What are yours?

These were mine, in no particular order:

West Side Story
Sweeney Todd
Gypsy
Carousel
Ragtime
Showboat
Guys & Dolls
My Fair Lady
Fiddler On The Roof
The King & I

Sorry. It's just every time I think of King and I, I hear Yul Brynner attempting to sing "A Puzzlement". And it makes me cringe.

Not kidding, it's my list. Make one of your own. The King & I has an amazing score and is probably one of the best by R&H.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I would choose, in no particular order:

Candide - especially for Glitter and Be Gay
On the Town - such a glorious score
My Fair Lady - an extraordinary mix of character song and musical score
Show Boat - such a rich musical text
Hello, Dolly! - such an enjoyable, entertaining score
Ragtime - fine mix of song and story
Porgy and Bess - the BEST Broadway Opera
South Pacific - magnificent, Hammerstein's greatest lyrics
Pal Joey - Dramatic musical text at its best
Irene - a masterpiece of the period

After thinking some more about this, I realized there are more than 10. I'd also have to include Guys & Dolls, Gypsy and She Loves Me
