Not "The King and I," if you ask anybody from Thailand. Not "Miss Saigon," according to some recent rants by Vietnamese-American theater people.

So --- anything?

Pacific Overtures comes to mind. It's still very much a Western show, but Sondheim, Hal Prince, and John Weidman all took care to be sensitive and accurate with the material.

"This reminds of a debate my brother and I were having about whether or not Stephen Sondheim is really light opera." -Frasier Crane

Fiddler On The Roof- as a Jew- it really does get to the heart of what it means to be a Jew- very relatable even though this took place in Anatevka- the family structure particularly is very realistic and spot on.

How foreign does Come From Away's Newfoundland feel to you? (I wouldn't be able to say, since my culture as a Mexican is completely different) but it feels like an honest representation. I'd like to hear what Newfies have to say about it but I guess they would feel comfortable with it overall.

Well, Come From Away was written by Canadians (though not Newfoundlanders so it's still possible for them to get it wrong). And it's my understanding that Newfoundlanders don't like to be called Newfies.

Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Just kidding.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

My stepdad's a newfoundlander, saw it in toronto and loved it. In general I keep hearing that it's absolutely spot on for newfie culture.

"Invisible Thread," the criminally overlooked and underrated show that took place primarily in Uganda.
