Do you think he has any chance against City of stars?

Zero chance...

Even if the two La La Land sounds split the vote, which is unlikely since they will campaign for one heavily so it doesn't happen, he also has to contend with the popular Timberlake song...

OSCAR goes to La La Land

There's no contending with Timberlake. Lin would easily win this if La La Land did not exist.

I do think splitting the vote is a possibility, but a small one as City of Stars has seemed to run out in front of Audition in the recent awards. The only other option is if the La La Land backlash kicks in more.

Doesn't help that Moana will not win best animated film

Hmm I disagree there. They often reward movies in categories when they know they wont be rewarded in the more important ones. It's rare that they throw a ton of Oscars at one movie as they will likely do this year.

in my heart i want Lin to PEGOT. but i think La La Land will. i loved La La Land more than Moana but Lin is wonderful and I love him. Audition is imo the best song from that film, so i'm sad it probably won't win.

Just saw La La Land, and I thought the music was pretty basic! No highlights, no catchy tunes. It wasn't bad, I just expected more from it. City of Stars was a big let down. I think if we are going purely off of the song "Can't Stop The Feeling" should win hands down. Talk about a work of pure melodic genius.

I'm really hoping Lin will win...history would be made twice: achieving EGOT at the youngest age plus in the least amount of time and that would be incredible. However, I think it'll go to la la land...especially after Moana losing at the golden globes.

Lin will absolutely win an Oscar. Just not this year.

Maybe if you keep writing that over and over for another few months, it will finally become true.  Or maybe not...

The cool thing about the Oscar going to La La Land is that it helps put Pasek & Paul on the path to their own EGOT, especially as they're strong contenders for both the Tony and the Grammy for Dear Evan Hansen.

I'm all for expressing opinions, what is so off putting is the know-it-all smug and snotty way some of you choose to express them. Gross.

Are they campaigning City of Stars with just Ryan Gosling's initial solo or the reprise with both of them? Personally I think the reprise is better

Will he perform? I thought the best song in the movie was John Legend's! Maybe that's because the other two aren't really singers... although Emma was great in her audition song.

I don't get all the love for City of Stars. It's an ok song but it certainly isn't a song that made me go "Wow! That's a great song!" Nothing groundbreaking there. The best song in "La La Land" is in my opinion, "Start A Fire".

Agreed. I like his Moana song. But I think Timberlake's made the most cultural impact. But there is so much hype and support for La La Land, so I'm sure it will go to one of their songs.

Hope we get Alessia Cara performing it!

the version that is nominated for the Oscar and won the Golden Globe is the "Duet" version (AKA the full song, the solo is kind of like a... pre-reprise, if that were a thing).

Liza, I don't want a La La Land backlash. I liked the movie a lot. However, the backlash does exist (it was just parodied on SNL a few days ago).

A parody does not necessarily stem out of backlash. It is common for SNL to parody popular and highly regarded movies, songs, and artists.
