Hi all! I will be in NYC during Jason Robert Brown's June concert at Subculture and was wondering about people's experiences at previous shows. I love Jason and his music so I thought it might be a fun concert to attend. I know every show is different due to the guests he brings, but I'd love to know more about the experience as a whole. Do they only perform his songs? How long does the concert typically last? Any advice or feedback is appreciated as I'm debating whether or not to get tickets. Thanks!

I saw the show a couple months ago with Ana Gasteyer and loved it. Jason performed maybe 12-15 songs, 4 of them were with Ana, including 'Summer in Ohio' and an Ethel Merman tune called 'Satan's Little Lamb'. He did a few covers (Easy Like Sunday Morning) and many of his hits (Shiska Goddess, stuff from Bridges, etc) and a song from a brand-new show he was working on. However, he said at one point that the month before, they had done no covers at all. I really loved the show. It was such a casual, great atmosphere and the musicians were awesome. Subculture is a great venue.

I wasn't even super familiar with JRB's music and I loved it.

That is terrific to hear! Thank you so much for the information. I'm hoping he announces who the next special guest will be, but I will probably go ahead and get a ticket as I really love his music!

I've been twice, and a friend of mine has been to almost everyone. I wouldn't depend on the guest too much since they really aren't the main focus of the show, really only 3-4 songs.

It's a ~90 min no intermission show, it's (almost) all his songs, with a really nice mix of his well known favorites, some unknown ones, stand-alone songs and he always premiers one new song from something he's just working on.

It's overall really fun. Seating is where it gets tricky and I would recommend calling Subculture and have them explain it to you because last time I honestly just tagged along with my friend and I can't describe it very precisely.

The sight lines in that space are pretty terrible so getting a good seat is important if you want to see faces. What they do is, they start handing out numbers some time in the afternoon. Then you come back I think one hour before the shoa and line up according to your number. You're let into the space in the order of your number and can then take whatever seat you want. A large portion of the front is usually reserved for his/the guest's guests, so the good seats really are limited.

So it's all pretty time intensive, esp considering Subculture is way out of the theater district. Just something to keep in mind for your trip planning.
