Can actors get transportation in their contracts? I know Laura Osnes had a driver through her blog and I'm wondering if that was apart her contract with Cinderella or if it was a personal thing.

Yes, it's quite common to have transportation written into a contract.

Yes, it is very common for A-listers and bigger theatre names..

Unless something has changed, I have seen or heard of all of the actors in Hamilton walking to the theater.

Not to be confused with Dave19.

Personal car service for principal Broadway actors has always existed.  In 1964 Barbra Streisand negotiated unsuccessfully to have limousine service during her run in FUNNY GIRL.  The producers only agreed to taxi service.  They also refused her request for her meals to be included on her contract.

I wiuld ASSUME that's because none of them are A-listers and/or didn't have the negotiating power to secure that... Aside from Lin but if so, that might just be a personal preference.

For example: Andy Karl is no A-list Celebrity or bonafide Broadway star but for over two years, he was given private black car service to/from anything related to ROCKY (workshops, labs, press events, rehearsals, etc). It just all depends on the contract and ensuing negotiations....

I feel like anytime I'm in the theater district I see a Hamilton actor walking around.  Getting harder and harder to play the cool New Yorker and ignore them.

As mentioned above, it's not guaranteed. Simply part of contract negotiations.

Yeah pretty common. And even in the regional houses, the actors are given cars in their contracts (well most contracts).

I mean I've seen Pasquale and Menzel walking to the theater. But walking to the theater and leaving the theater are a little different.

I think the only two people who have/had the power are Lin and Groff. But personal preference definitely played a role especially with Groff.  He rode his bike a majority of the time.

I remember during one of the blizzards, LMM posted on his twitter about being on the subway with Audra and some other well known people. But doesn't she live in Westchester and he lives uptown? So they wouldn't even take the same subway anyway. Who knows.

She has a home in Inwood. They all were on the subway because it was quicker and safer than being in a car during the snow blizzard. Shows were cancelled that particular day.

As do many others, including Kelli O'Hara, who have apartments in NYC but have full-time residences outside of the City. Again, not that abnormal...

When I walked out of Bright Star the other night I actually wondered about this. I saw a few Ubers waiting at the stage door and was curious as to if the actors had ordered their own cars or if they were ordered via the production or something. There didn't appear to be any town cars or chauffeur-looking rides waiting, and it made me question if a leading lady like Carmen Cusack (who isn't at all known but who is carrying the show on her back) is among those stars who gets a car written in her contract or if she doesn't as she's not a massive "star."

I would think they could if they are big enough star. I remember talking to Alice Ripley after "Next To Normal" and she said she was heading to the subway to go home. I have seen others like Brian d'Arcy James ride their bike.  I don't ever remember seeing many people with car waiting for them but maybe I have not looked close enough - lol.

It makes sense from a management standpoint to allot for transportation for the people who are carrying a show. It gives them one less thing to worry about and (other than traffic) ensures that they get home in a timely manner, keeping them fresh. I noticed Jessie Mueller had one of those big black SUVs waiting for her after Waitress this week. She's far from a diva, it just makes sense though.

There is always a black SVU waiting for Sierra Boggess after School of Rock

I certainly have seen stars like Angela Lansbury whisked from stage door to waiting BMW), etc.. I get that...

At the recent Cabaret, Michelle Williams, Alan Cumming and even Linda Emond had cars waiting on the street (this was one of the "stage door crowd kept inside the barricade - stars outside the barricade on the curb" setups) - while fellow lead Danny Burstein just walked down the street past us to grab the subway and/or walk home.

Some actors are also more comfortable taking public transportation during daylight hours and choose to have a car service only when leaving the theater at night. I don't live in the city, but I personally don't like riding the subway after 11:00pm if I'm alone. Many actors also live outside of Midtown, so a car service can actually be quicker at night.

^^ again, as has been mentioned here several times.... all contract negotiations are different. what we don't know about your CABARET reference, for example, is if Burstein opted to potentially receive a weekly travel allowance instead of private car service? or perhaps his agent just never negotiated it into his contract. we simply don't know. everyone is different.

to NJ_Broadwaygirl's point, some productions opt to just provide the car service automatically. i assume that was the case for Andy Karl, who probably didn't have much leverage in negotiations, and the development of ROCKY.  they see it as a way to not only keep the actor happy but also safe and healthy.  most of these general management and producing companies have corporate accounts with providers and it keeps the overall cost down. it's a relatively cheap and worthwhile investment. more producers would be smart to follow the trend and just include it anyway in star character offers.
