As a theatre lover who doesn't reside in New York (just yet), I've noticed recently that the majority of the traveling I do is motivated by a desire to see certain shows. While nine times out of ten this equates to making trips to the city, I thought it might be fun to expand my horizons by attempting to visit and see shows at all of the regional companies who have been recipients of the Regional Theatre Tony Award.
Out of the 40 winners, I have been to 6: Arena Stage, American Repertory Theater, Hartford Stage, Goodspeed Opera House, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Cleveland Play House. I'm hoping to knock a few more off this summer when I visit Chicago to see War Paint. Out of the companies I've listed, one of my favorites has to be Cleveland Play House. They staged a spellbinding production of The Crucible in the round last fall that was one of my favorite productions of 2015. As a company, I also admire CPH for their ability to engage more diverse audiences than the ones I've encountered through other theatergoing experiences.
My questions for all of you are: How many off of the list have you visited? Which ones were your favorites, and what did you see there? And needless to say, this list does not account for all of the wonderful regional work that is being done around the country. What additions would you like to see to it?
Ha that's fun! As it so happens, I have also been to 6, but we only share one in common! As of right now, I've been to:
[EDITED: Because I just noticed you asked us to say what we've seen there]
American Conservatory Theatre - many things over the years. Don't care to list :P
Oregon Shakespeare Festival
-As You Like It
-Romeo and Juliet
-Troilus and Cressida
-August: Osage County
American Repertory Theatre
-Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812
San Francisco Mime Troupe - I saw one of their productions as a tween. Didn't much care for it. I don't even remember the name of it.
Berkeley Repertory
-American Idiot
-Rita Moreno: Life Without Makeup
-Chinglish
-Vanya and Sonya etc.
-No Man's Land
-One Man, Two Guvnors
-Amelie
Signature Theatre Company
-Incident at Vichy
Also, I totally know this doesn't count at all, but I feel like mentioning that I've technically been TO the Mark Taper Forum, but I've never seen a show there or even been inside the theatre (Sorry, that was kinda pointless, I know)
I've never really paid much attention to this award before, but it's a really interesting list. I think I'll start following it a bit more. I think I'll go read the Tony rulebook to see what they say about it.
I have been to.... the Alley (my hometown LORT, though multiple times). Haha. Growing up, my family would have rather gone to a basketball or football game rather than a play when we were visiting a different city and I haven't done much travelling alone. Maybe I should start?
That being said, I have been to quite a few regional/small theatres who aren't on the list (Indiana Rep, Shakespeare of NJ, etc.)
The Mark Taper (Flower Drum Song), Old Globe (Damn Yankees), La Jolla Playhouse (Hunchback of Notre Dame), South Coast Repertory (Six Degrees of Separation), and Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
I've been to all the listed theaters in Chicago and the Berkeley Rep. I guess I should be visiting more theaters when I'm traveling to places other than New York! New goal! :)
I have been to 2. The Denver Center Theatre Company and Singnature in NYC.
I have seen way too many productions at DCTC to list. I am also proud to say I was on the Chairmans' Board there. I have only seen one show at Signature, Mecury Fur.
