I was making a list of my favorite movies yesterday and realized they're almost all based on true stories. In some of these the bad guys were played brilliantly, Ralph Fiennes in "Schindlers List" was amazing, and it's hard to think of a bigger ****than Alan Alda as Dr. Robert Gallo in "And The Band Played On." Who are some of your favorite despicable characters?
Robert Mitchum CAPE FEAR and THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER Barbara Hershey PORTRAIT OF A LADY Laura Linney THE HOUSE OF MIRTH Helena Bonham Carter THE WINGS OF THE DOVE Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey HOUSE OF CARDS Carice van Houten GAME OF THRONES Margaret Hamilton THE WIZARD OF OZ Lionel Barrymore IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE Louise Fletcher ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST John Huston CHINATOWN Laurence Olivier MARATHON MAN Gregory Peck THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL Claude Raines NOTORIOUS Christoph Waltz INGLORIOUS BASTERDS Leonardo di Caprio DJANGO UNCHAINED Imelda Staunton HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX and HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HOLLOWS Kathy Bates MISERY Sergi Lopez PAN'S LABYRINTH Gary Oldman THE CONTENDER Ruth Gordon, Sydney Blackmer, Ralph Bellamy et al ROSEMARY'S BABY Glenn Close DANGEROUS LIAISONS and FATAL ATTRACTION Matthew McConaughey KILLER JOE Judith Anderson REBECCA Gene Tierney THE RAZOR'S EDGE and LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN Dennis Hopper BLUE VELVET and SPEED Angela Lansbury THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE Charles Laughton LES MISERABLES Basil Rathbone THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL Meryl Streep THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA Denzel Washington TRAINING DAY Sharon Stone BASIC INSTINCT (or is she?) Great list I've seen most of them. I had forgotten Laughton played Javert. I also watched a 70's movie Les Miz, it was the worst of the lot and there are a lot. Love when the warden goes into the hole and says to Dufresne, "or am I just being obtuse".
I have to question Carice van Houten (Melisandre) from Game of Thrones as being a bad guy. I'm not so sure she's bad. She has her own motivations, and yes, she's done some bad things, but who in GoT hasn't (well, who's still alive)? I guarantee you, if she's the one who save Jon, she will not be looked on as a bad guy. Joffrey and Ramsay? THOSE are bad guys. I think it's too early still to call Melisandre either way.
I would also seriously question Javert as a bad guy. Antagonist, yes. Bad guy? Hardly - in fact, he's as on the side of the law as anyone, which makes it impossible for him to be a "bad guy".
I'd add J.K. Simmons in Whiplash to the list above.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
Sure, some on my list are a lot worse than others, but Melisandre.... sure, if you don't consider demanding the burning of a little girl bad, then she's a perfect angel.
As far as having her reasons, all baddies have them (if they don't, the actor has failed at finding them).
Kevin Dillon as Bunny played an evil dumb ass, but real bad guys need to be smart. Amon Goeth, Robert Gallo, real people who weren't morons. Berenguer was great as a bad guy in a few movies if I remember.
