A question for those on this board who are familiar with the business end of Broadway:

How much do the producers of a show pay to occupy a Broadway house? Am I right in guessing they'd pay per week, seeing as how many things on Broadway operate on a weekly basis? If the pricing varies, which variables are factors? House size? A certain percentage of the weekly gross? Do the different companies (Shubert, Nederlander, etc.) charge different amounts?

This purely out of curiosity. Don't worry, I'm not looking to bring my non-existent musical to Broadway :P

everything in the theatre is weekly. a producer pays a flat amount, which varies depending on the theatre, the show, the demand, and miscellaneous other factors; a pass-through of expenses; and a percentage of the gross. It is always subject to negotiation and in some cases the landlords take an equity stake in the show that offsets some of the first two items. On a successful show, the percentage yields the lion's share of the revenue. There is no specific difference from landlord to landlord although obviously sometimes one deal looks better than another. In the typical tight market for space, there is not a lot of room for negotiation on the producer's part, except that a show that is expected to be a blockbuster may get some slack. Likewise, during slow periods, we often see a lot of marginal shows, especially by producers who are not a part of the club. The same is true for theatres that are not desirable (like the Lyric and the Marquis).
