July 4th in NYC

I was all set to watch the fireworks from a rooftop in Hell's Kitchen until I realized the fireworks are on the East River and only visible from the Lower East Side area and Brooklyn. I'm sure all rooftop bars on the LES will be packed and super expensive on July 4th. I know several of you live in the Hell's Kitchen area, so maybe you can give your expertise - will there be any New Jersey fireworks that are on the Hudson/visible from Hell's Kitchen?

I've lived in NYC for a while but never seem to have paid attention to July 4th before. Any recommendations for activities that are preferably not packed with tourists and kids? Broadway is generally pretty slow on July 4th, right?
