All the news reports I have seen on TV and read online are shocked to reveal that off-duty NJ police officer Pedro Abad has previous blemishes on his driving record which include prior suspensions for driving under the influence! Why are none of the news reporters bringing up that many police boldly give each other "professional courtesy" when they have an infraction (break the law)?

Online news articles state:
Abad’s Instagram account is filled with posts about drinking and video selfies taken as he drove his police cruiser.
Abad was also cited in 2012 for using a cellphone while driving.

Very frustrated that the news doesn't bring up the "professional courtesy" rather than him being punished (like ALL citizens would in this same situation) which could have contributed to his continued bad habits and ultimate death of 2 others!

Really interested to see just how this plays out for Mr Abad now that this is in the public eye. Will the families of the 2 dead police officers give him "professional courtesy" now that their loved ones are gone?

Right now, people with suspended licenses still drive with relative impugnity. How many times can you suspend a license? Until their are serious legal consequences, including jail time, for driving with a suspended license, not much will change. The laws need to be strengthened & it needs to be done NOW.
