But despite his penchant for animated films, the next Disney film Schwartz hopes to bring to the stage is the part live-action and part animated film "Enchanted."
"I have a notion of a way to do 'Enchanted.' I've sort of mentioned it to [Disney Theatricals chief Thomas] Schumacher," he said. "I know they're completely obsessed with 'Frozen' now. But someday now I feel there's a lovely and theatrical way to do' Enchanted' live that could things that we weren't able to do in the movie and use theatre in a very interesting way." I'm intrigued at his notion of how to do it. It would obviously have to be redesigned to replace the animated style and references with something else.
I'm also amused that he would throw that subtle dig at the FROZEN madness!
I think Tom Schumacher has mentioned in interviews that Enchanted would be hard to do on stage because of the live action/animated element of the film plus there would be some things that would be rethought.
Wouldn't Enchanted on stage sort of destroy the whole point of the movie? They couldn't do the cartoon to real world. Unless they used some sort of pre recorded footage.
^ 'Mary Poppins' took a different approach to "Jolly Holiday", which worked very well. Instead of a cartoon world, it was a colorful world during the song.
"Unless they used some sort of pre recorded footage."
That'd be a helluva long time you'd be watching prerecorded footage.

ATTENTION FANS: I will be played by James Barbour in the upcoming musical, "BroadwayWorld: The Musical."
I guess this could be funny if they used the "animated" sequences to heavily poke fun at the previous princess films that have been presented onstage, a la Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid and probably Frozen by that time.

One of the main things about Enchanted is the collision of the two worlds: fairy tale and real life.
The beginning is specifically animated for a reason; it was used to pay homage and to make fun of the Disney fairy tale. The playful talking animals paired against an graceful wide eyed princess that sings about princes, and a cardboard cut out prince; all things paired with the Disney image.
Then, the point afterwards is to combine the worlds; as they are *very* different! The Disney fairy tale is shiny, colorful, and happy...the real world: brutal, cold, and harsh...no singing, no talking animals, no marriage after first sight...none of that.
This is a rather cinematic musical, because the beginning *needs* to be animated. It has to have that contrast...
I could see it potentially working if, as others have alluded to, they replace the animation parody aspects with stereotypical musical theatre parody. Andalasia could be portrayed with bright colours, shiny happy acting and choreography, an idiosyncratic style of set and costume, etc. The 'real world' could be styled and performed much more naturalistically, and the real world characters could avoid singing and dancing until they get seduced by Giselle's winsome ways. An important moment would be Robert singing to Giselle for the first time. Etc. Not sure if it could ever work as well as the film though.
