Hi, I will be spending some time in Chicago in June, and I don't know anything about the theatre scene in Chicago other than the existence of Steppenwolf, The Oriental Theatre, and that there is a lot more to know.

Can someone please give me some guidance or recommendations ... or maybe point me toward any helpful online resources if you do not want to get too specific with recommendations on a particular theatre company or venue. Thank you very much.

There's a great, and recently updated, thread on this just a little bit further down the page. The show information won't be applicable, but there's some great resources in there, so you might want to check it out.

The major equity theaters in Chicago are:

The Goodman Theatre http://www.goodmantheatre.org/
Steppenwolf http://www.steppenwolf.org/
Lookingglass Theatre http://lookingglasstheatre.org/
Victory Gardens http://victorygardens.org/
Chicago Shakespeare- https://www.chicagoshakes.com/
Writers Theater-http://www.writerstheatre.org/
The Court http://www.courttheatre.org/
Northlight Theatre http://www.northlight.org
Timeline Theater- http://www.timelinetheatre.com/

I don't know when you'll be there or what your interests are, but the shows these theaters have running in June almost all sound like very good bets based on the creative teams and the casts. Take a look and ask some questions. I'd love to help. There are other passionate Chicago fans that can also make suggestions.

If you're looking for something a little more daring, you could try some of the Improv Chicago is known for, or some non-equity storefront. Let me know if that interests you and I (and I'm sure others) will point you in a direction.

Hello. I would start with http://www.theatreinchicago.com which is a pretty comprehensive listing of shows and professional reviews in Chicago. The first week in June currently lists about 30 shows playing but that may grow as time goes on. Just type in the dates you are looking for a show.

I would also look at http://www.broadwayinchicago.com for touring shows - On Your Feet a pre-Broadway tryout and Once a return of the national touring company appear to be the only touring shows running in June.

The League of Chicago Theatres website is also a good bet - http://www.chicagoplays.com That website has a link to http://www.hottix.org the Chicago equivalent of TKTS in NYC.

Finally, Goldstar Chicago is a great website for advance discount tickets - http://www.goldstar.com/chicago. Plus they have reviews by theatre patrons rather than professional critics.

Steppenwolf, Goodman, Chicago Shakespeare, Lookingglass, Timeline, Stage 773, Theatre Wit, the Den Theatre, Court Theatre and the Chopin Theatre are some of the more prominent theatre companies/venues in Chicago so always check their websites.

Hope this helps.
