Let's include everyone who ever acted in a single movie, even a cameo. We want to make sure no one is offended by anyone being excluded. Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't say that correctly. Let me try again. LET'S INCLUDE EVERYONE WHO EVER ACTED IN A SINGLE MOVIE, EVEN A CAMEO. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE NO ONE IS OFFENDED BY ANYONE BEING EXCLUDED.

She was a huge part of the TV Show that is the Oscars ceremony. The Emmys would be a more appropriate forum for recognition.

Posted: 2/23/15 at 2:51amThe industry lost a lot of greats in the last years and there's no way everyone could have been included. Especially those who are known for other mediums. Without looking I can only name two movies Rivers appeared in and one with Stritch. They were honored at other awards shows. I feel like we go through this every single year.

Grace and class: not exactly salient traits in Hollywood.
But then, Joan Rivers was not going to be honored by dimming of the lights on Broadway, either, until public outcry caused it to happen.

As the Academy Awards have built more prestige and become an institution and less a venue to support the arts, I wonder if someone like Robert Osborne, who never did much on or behind the movie screen but who is the Academy's "official" historian and greets nominees at the door, will be included when he passes... I think he would deserve the Academy's recognition, and I think Joan did, too.

Yes, because nothing really says classy like Joan "Michele Obama is a tranny" Rivers.
I don't see the issue- yes, both were well known actresses, but neither will be remembered much at all for their work in film, so this wasn't really the place to remember them. And it's not as if there haven't been many tributes to both Stritch and Rivers anyway.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

In 2011 actor Henry (Harry) Morgan passed. The academy left him off the tribute sequence because he was considered to be a TV actor. If you go to the listing of his work at IMDB and you take out the dozens of TV series and then take out the dozens of TV movies, all you're left with is around a hundred Hollywood films.
When they decided to leave him off the tribute, I stopped paying attention to who was there and who wasn't.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez was a film critic and screenwriter. In fact, he wrote the screenplay of the Spanish-language film classic ERENDIRA with its storied Hollywood history.
And Maya Angelou most certainly has Hollywood bonafides. She was the first African American woman to direct a feature film.
It's unfortunate that both Elaine and Joan were overlooked but all those honored in memoriam were deserving of recognition as well. How the Academy habitually gets this wrong is beyond me.
