For the last year or so I have noticed several Mint Theater productions that look very enjoyable but I have never attended one of their shows .... I live out of town and typically fill my visits to New York with the latest and greatest Broadway shows. Like most of us, I have to make tough decisions on which shows to see.
Does anyone have an opinion on the general quality of Mint Theater productions? Is it worth using up a precious spot on an out of towner's theatre schedule? Thanks for your help
Well, with anything, I would say quality varies, but generally good. I think it is more a question of how you define it, and your trip. If you are all about the latest and great Broadway shows to fill your slots, you might not enjoy a small production in an off-Broadway house by a resident company since, even when meticulously designed it built, you won't have the bells and whistles of Broadway. Are you more curious in seeing good and enjoyable theatre in NYC? Then give the Mint a shot if you see an upcoming show you might like. It is no different than the gamble you would make buying any ticket to any Broadway show.
I see a lot of theater at a lot of other places other than New York, the majority of which obviously do not have all of the bells and whistles of most Broadway productions so I have no problem attending something on a smaller scale.
I was just curious about the overall quality of Mint productions ... I will be more specific and ask about Mint quality relative to other smaller theater companies.
As you alluded to, there can be great or poor productions regardless of a show's budget or the number of seats in its theater. I think I may give their newest production a try, the historical/period piece subject matter of many of their productions is right up my alley, so we shall see.
I only saw one of them, previous production of George Kelly's "Fatal Weakness" and it was awesome. Gorgeously staged, wonderful color-coded costume, and great ensemble. The staging was pretty elaborate too, didn't feel "cheap" at all. 3 hours of theater at absolute best!! Based on that, I can recommend Mint Theater without reservation! :)
I hope you enjoy it! I wish. I could have given a more thought out answer, but I was not sure what to tell you given the metrics. The Mint is a quality company and I hope you find what you want.
I wanted to provide an update to this conversation. I saw Fashions For Men at Mint this past week and really enjoyed it. The theater is a tiny space on the third floor of an office building. It felt very cozy and comfortable. Every seat in the theater is a good one.
The play was a dry comedic study of human nature .... similar to the premise of The Visit, but oh so different. I won't say any more other than please consider going to see this production. I am certainly glad that I did.
I was sent a discount code by the Mint which brings the price of a ticket down to only $45. In my opinion, the production was a much better investment of my time and money than The Visit.
Their excellent production of London Wall was filmed and shown on PBS in the fall. You might be able to find it online somewhere.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
