It still did well but looks like Kinky Boots could be slowing down.

All shows except three were down in gross. Really not surprising.

Can HinV last with these numbers? Yes, all the shows were down, but this show the most after a NYT rave review. Do these reviews matter less than they used to?

Billy Porter did leave this past week, so that likely has something to do with its dip. That being said, it still hit the million mark. I did the lottery two weeks ago on a Tuesday and there were only about 35 people there. I think they found room for everyone.

Sad that Honeymoon in Vegas still looks like this even after reviews. And the snow storm wont help them for this week's gross either. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the show.

Even with the raves...Honeymoon is not improving as it needs to show some increase in ticket sales now or it won't last and it's 2for1 Broadway week till 2/5 and that is not helping the show sell out either!

Honeymoon is a textbook example of 1) bad producing, and 2) the (to-be-celebrated) loss of the Times power to have any effect on a show's success.

"Billy Porter did leave this past week, so that likely has something to do with its dip."

How so? If it was his last week one would expect the grosses to be higher this week if people went to rush to see him. Looking at the small decrease and declines in other shows, my personal interpretation is that the decline (which was small anyway) is not related to Billy Porter.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I haven't been following Broadway for very long, but these months in particular are always pretty dreary, aren't they? Tourists are simply out. Valentine's maybe, but...

Honeymoon is kind of a baffling. I mean, it's not a bad show at all. It's quite entertaining. I think the logo design is good. It just for some reason isn't sparking interest in anyone. How was Gentlemen's Guide? I remember it suffering for awhile too. I'm sure Honeymoon will be nominated. Has it even done the usual morning talk shows, etc? I haven't seen it really advertised anywhere?

It's Only A Play is holding its own, if it kept that run rate for the full week it would have been up for the week. I thought it was going to fall fast without Lane.

Mark my words, the Nederlander will have a new tenant by the Tony cut off.

"How was Gentleman's Guide?"

If you go back and look at the numbers, Gentleman's Guide was usually way ahead of what HinV is seeing. During their first holidays they even hit $800k - I'm talking a year ago. Plus, GGTLAM had slow and steady climb. I don't see that here.

Honeymoon's failure to launch -- so far -- does make one continue to wonder about the impact of reviews. They alone don't create the buzz, and if the buzz isn't there, they seem almost powerless to alter a show's trajectory. SIDE SHOW and VEGAS have nothing in common other than high endorsements by the NY Times, but Vegas, so far, can't get any more momentum. And it didn't when it was working around the holidays, so January alone isn't the reason for its flat disconnect. It's ever mysterious.

To be fair, HinV's reviews outside the Times weren't exactly glowing and many out of towners read the reviews in their regional markets more than the Times.

Personally, I'm forever crossing my fingers that On the Town makes it to Tony season.

Hunchy takes the Needer?

MDM2015
#21Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 1/25/15

"Hunchy takes the Needer?"

I doubt it. Disney timelines are worked out too far in advance for a last minute cancel. I'm not saying, "no" but I think unlikely. But, there is still time for a show to sneak in if HinV announces soon - Tony deadline is three months away.

I am fascinated by the NYT having less (or is it NO) impact on sales. Perhaps it is a wrong assumption that such reviews can turn a show. When has the Times review saved a show? Does a good review just make those who wanted to see the show jump and see it sooner? But if few want to see the new show before the reviews (as with HinV) then there is no change? I think shows coming from theaters with strong subscription seasons like Papermill are tricky. They may give false hope. The Last Ship did not sell well in Chicago and played to half houses. Hmmmm

Hunchback won't arrive until the Fall of 2015. I can't see it transferring immediately after it's Papermill run.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Per HinV, maybe the tourist population at large are associating it with the movie and...they didn't like the movie. The Rotten ratings are officially 62% from ~30 critics and 35% from over 28k viewer ratings.
