OK this always seemed pretty bad to me... I love even the worst of Menken (ask me how many times I've played the demo for Dream on Royal Street! I dare ya,) and while creator Fogelman has done a lot of great writing for Pixar, I never liked The Neighbors, his alien sitcom for ABC. Menken did a musical episode for them which was way too jokey and just sounded like Disney/Menken pastiche (which makes sense in context,) and that seems to have led to this.
I will say, after watching this infomercial for the series last week, it kinda looks like it will be more fun--of the stupid Spamalot-but-not-as-good, sort than I expected. Great cast, and Joshua Sasse seems to be half naked much of the time. Plus they are playing the episodes (burning through them?) 2 a week for a month in Once's time slot, so it's not a big commitment. I'll actually be watching.
Anyway, the episode long ad is online--if you're in the US (Since BWW hasn't mentioned this, I expect them now to list it within 45 mins of this post)
I can't believe how awful that was. They actually used the word "crabs" as in pubic lice in a one of the lyrics. I liked the Weird Al cameo but that was about it. A song with every Jewish reference? WTF?
Yikes this is a tonal mess and it is cringe-worthy.
I kinda agree. By the same token--they say, over, and over, and over again that that's the concept of the show, particularly the lyrics. So you can't say they're pretending it's something it's not. (I'm a bit surprised Disney let them get away with some of the sexual stuff which seems more extreme than the little I've been able to handle on Once...)
I kept asking my friend why the main theme of the song they have at the end--the title tune, sounded like something from the Broadway Beauty and the Beast. And he pointed it out:
"the melody is very close to a major-key version of "How Long Can This Go On?," actually, a reprise of which forms the verse of "If I Can't Love Her."
I love Menken's work but Slater has no internal censor and some of his lyrics defy belief. I loved LEAP OF FAITH but I still cringed a lot. I remember being delighted when one lyric was changed in previews: in the song "On the Bus," the original lyric contained a paraphrase of "sh*t or get off of the pot." Glad to see that disappear.
