"I just listened to the Amazon samples with my jaw on the floor."

For how amazing you think it is? Or how awful?

It is racking up quite the abundance of one-star reviews.

I've listened to the whole album. The thing with established weirdos like The Flaming Lips is that they have such a template for their sound that you can pretty much guess what this will sound like before you press play. Woozy, slightly seasick, off-center spindle on the 45 (look it up) vocals and instruments. Warbly off-key vocals.

So the only break from the sameness you can expect is generally brought in by the guests. Specifically Tegan & Sara on Lovely Rita and Miley Cyrus on A Day in the Life. The latter is the greatest track on this album but ends anti-climactically.

I can’t proclaim it awful or amazing before listening to the whole thing, but the samples caught me totally by surprise. Weirdos they may be, but I’ve never felt a sameness from The Flaming Lips. They’re one of a small handful few bands where I know to expect anything, I know to not be surprised, and they still surprise me almost every time. They consistently surprise me more than Radiohead masters of “weird.” They surprise me in the same way that Soul Coughing continues to surprise me, even though I’ve heard every single one of their songs at least 100 times. And so I’m very excited to listen to the whole album.
