"The original cast of Alan Bennett’s The History Boys has reunited to give Maggie Smith some ‘male crumpet’ in her latest film.
"Maggie, currently on ITV’s still delicious Downton Abbey, is starring in a film adaptation of Bennett’s play The Lady In The Van.
"She plays Miss Shepherd (the role she created on stage), an eccentric who moved her death-trap of a vehicle on to the driveway of Bennett’s home in Camden Town, North London, and stayed for nearly two decades.
"The film’s being made by Nicholas Hytner, who directed The History Boys and The Lady In The Van on stage, and he hit on the idea of featuring as many of the History Boys as possible."
I read PJ's post as "dreary", which is my opinion of the play; a late Bennetian apologia for his own life choices.
There's no natural fit for the History Boys in the play. Though,if there's a totally gratuitous scene of them in the communal showers, it will at least afford me some nostalgia for my own schooldays.
