I have to say that I really love this album. She sounds fantastic and the orchestrations are different enough to make the same old songs sound fresh and new. I will say that I don't exactly understand why "When You Wish Upon A Star" is considered a "holiday" song, but it's still a nice version of the song.
Isn't it a little early? (Both holidays-in-October and Amazon tells me it doesn't release until 10/14.) That said, the cover art weirds me out just a little, not sure why, but I look forward to sampling the album.
Haven't heard it yet, but very excited for it - I love the track listing. I saw that the deluxe CD you can get at Target includes 2 bonus tracks - does anyone know what those 2 songs are?
^I can't remember one of them, but I know one is called Let it Snow. Assuming that's going to be some sort of holiday take on the mega hit. Unfortunately, the album was leaked onto YouTube which is why some have heard it already even though it doesn't come out until Tuesday. I'm excited for it!
In Europe, specifically Scandinavia, and in Japan, "When You Wish Upon a Star" is considered a Christmas song. This is partially because of the star being associated with the Christmas star, and more because of a Disney packaged animated special shown traditionally around Christmas in those countries, using that as its theme song.
I guess part of it has leaked, or was released in other countries? I heard Mariah's "All I Want For Christimas" and it sounded fun - so I will be stopping by Target on Tuesday.
^Well, TFM's comment. Her voice sounds quite clear given that she recorded this thing between 8 shows a week... I like the duet, but my modern sensibilities kept buzzing the red flags with the lyrics. It just felt very awkward.
Were these arrangements specifically for this album? This arrangement of "Silent Night" so perfectly fits her vocal style.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
My local Target today had the deluxe edition out for sale for 15.99 and when I went to buy it it wouldn't scan , they had to call a manger and he said the street date is Tuesday and they can't sell it till then. I said well you need to go take all the copies off the shelf. I thought I had an early present !'
Jeffrey2, Target could get in trouble by the label for selling it before the release date. Not that it is enforced. However, they may have done you a favor. On Tuesday, it may be on sale cheaper than the $15.99 price tag.
Listening right now. I am already hooked. I love Christmas music sung by great voices. This is a remarkable recording. December Prayer alone is worth the price of the CD. Too bad there's no time for a televised Christmas special.
Wish I could listen to it. Debating on whether I'll be downloading it on iTunes or making the drive out to the nearest Target for the deluxe edition. The cover's not my favorite picture of Idina, either. Might peruse some fan art covers that will undoubtedly be online.
I can tell you that there are some AMAZING photos for this album (such as featured in my avatar); I wouldn't have chosen that particular image for the cover.

Tomorrow's the day!! I can't wait to see what comes out of this album press-wise, and how successful it is. I'm hopeful it just might explode come December.
