I just wanted to share my exciting news with everyone. I'm going to be going on Friday morning to sign a lease on a new apartment! For those following all of the affordable housing drama around the city, this is for the new building on 29th Street that Related agreed to build with a 70% preference for performing artists (which is the preference group that I fall into).
It's been a bit of an exhaustive process, though thankfully far faster than it could have been (I have a friend who moved into Manhattan Plaza earlier this year after ten years on that wait list). Knowing that I'm now protected from crazy rent increases, and getting into entirely new construction, has just completely changed how I'm viewing both my immediate and long term future here in the city.
I'm floating on air at the moment and can't wait to do my inspection of my new apartment and take measurements on Friday and start planning all my decorating (I won't actually move in until December when I get back from the TYA tour I'm currently in rehearsals for).
You have no idea, Tag. I started interviews and all that for this place back in March, and have actually been quasi-homeless since May when I moved out of my old place in Woodside because the roommate who actually held that lease was moving her boyfriend in and the rest of us out. Luckily I had work out of town for the summer that provided housing, but I've been on friends' couches and air mattresses on the floor since getting back to the city earlier this month.
I'm still a bit in shock that it's actually going to happen, but a very happy shock

Fabulous! Enjoy! I live in Manhattan Plaza myself, since 2001, and it's the best move I ever made. Just remember to keep VERY organized records of your finances, because you have to do the "recertification" process every year, which requires filling out about 20 pgs of forms. And Never, Never, Never underestimate your salary for the coming year, or you will have to pay back any monies in a "retroactive" rent bill. Make sure you understand all of this, especially if you're in a profession in which your work is not steady. (and keep receipts for EVERYTHING pertaining to jobs that can be deducted). Enjoy the 30% Club! Free gas and electric. Free A/c. The 29th-34th st nabe is going to improve very rapidly too. Congrats!
iluvtheatertrash, I had no idea we were neighbors. I actually feel the opposite of you, I loved Woodside for the whole six years I was there. If I hadn't gotten into this place I would be looking to stay in Woodside, or go to Sunnyside or LIC.
I'm so excited. Right next to the High Line (you can see directly to my windows from the final extension that follows along 30th before turning north again at 12th Ave). I also overlook the second floor roof terrace of the Ohm Building (the new one at the corner of 30th and 11th), so my view from my living room will never get blocked in by any new construction behind us on 30th.
Congrats! We're coming back to NYC this weekend for a batch of show going and definitely a trek on the latest extension of the High Line. We'll wave in your general direction when we're in the vicinity.
(I guess your first decor decision is what kind of window coverings to install.)
Right by the high line is...well, you couldn't ask for more!
