To the tourist trade-it's a roaring 20s[maybe that's where the 20th century comes in] flapper girl ,perhaps it all takes place on a train, but MADCAP ?? Bullets-Yes,This-No.
I mean isn't the show sort of madcap? I mean it's full of eccentric characters and the score contains Comden/Green's zaniest lyrics ever.
"I've got to get me out of here
This place is full of dirty old men
And the navigators and their mappy maps
And moldy heads and pissing on sugar cubes
While you stare at your books."
These Roundabout "It's about..." taglines get more and more embarrassing.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
It was clearly more than inspiration. The silhouette is nearly in the exact same pose. The original even did it better because the photograph of the woman looks much better straight on than it does to the side in the 20th Century artwork.
The revival Cheno poster leaves a lot to be desired, it reminds me of the blue LuPone GYPSY poster when it eventually made its way to the St James. The photo they used was a snapshot from ENCORES! (or was it from the Ravinia Festival?) Anyway, cheap, cheap and badly photoshopped.
