But they don't always HAVE to come out the stage door, they can use other exits too- Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones did that sometimes after The Best Man.

It actually was kind of weird what Fran did, but she didn't seem rude. She came out and yelled "who wants a picture?" and people sort of assumed they meant pictures WITH her, but nope. Then she said "I'm not signing!" She stood there facing our side and smiling for people to photograph her, and then turned to the other side. It was weird.

"Just wondering, has the rest of the cast been coming out? Victoria Clark, Ann Harada, Joe Carroll especially? I'd hate for the rest of the cast to shy away from the stagedoor because of the crowds for Carly and Fran."

Joe Carroll came out, I think (There was a guy who I think was him...). Ann Harada did not. Victoria Clark was off the night I saw it, but I had happened to walk by the stage door the night before (which was Carly's first night) and she was out in the cold, signing and chatting. She looked very tired and unwell, and I right away knew she would be out the next night. I was very upset not to get to see Vicki, she's one of my absolute favourites, but Jill Abramowitz was good and Vicki looked really ill when I saw her.

On Carly/Fran's first night, Ann Harada, Victoria Clark, Todd Buonopane, Stephanie Gibson, and several ensemble members came out. I did not see Joe Carroll, but as Emma commented, he seemed to have come out the stage door the following evening.

@OASISJEFF
"Well, it is the stage door, not the autograph door, so that is where the company typically come out to exit the building and go home."

the reason i said ""why even come out at all if you're just going to stand there for people to take photos OF you? Seems a bit cocky to me."

is because like DARREYL102 said...there ARE other exits to the theater. you don't HAVE to exit from that door. that's all i meant by it. why disappoint fans by standing there and not signing their playbills, just standing in one place for people to take photos of you (DISCLAIMER: as i've said..i know the stage door isn't mandatory, don't need that speech)..you might as well just not stagedoor at all.

I have never understood this whole 'stage door' thing to get a signature or photograph with someone you don't know.Surely your appreciation at the end of a performance shows a performer how you feel.I realise that some signatures become valuable and some do it for the thrill of meeting a 'celebrity',but the endless comments[I know,I don't have to read them] about how so & so behaved on a certain day seems a total waste of energy and time.

^ I like staying at the stage door to show my appreciation. I don't get signatures to sell later on either. I think it's just the whole fun interaction thing. You're around people who are as enthusiastic as you and it's a nice feeling. I think it's a wonderful thing that we are able to tell the actor in person how much we appreciate them.

I never looked at it from that angle,Promises,thanks-maybe I am just old[elderly] and jaded and need to look at it from a younger perspective.I enjoy your enthusiasm.

Don't get me wrong, a LOT of people go stage door crazy just to say they got an autograph from someone. But I just have so many friends that don't see the point in theatre and don't understand how hard theatre actors work, that it makes me appreciate the art a million times more!

I've met some of my best friends at stage doors :)

SweetLips - as one of BroadwayWorld's resident teenagers, the stage door is one of the ultimate thrills for me. Personally, I really didn't mind that Fran Drescher didn't sign, because I have no attachment to Fran Drescher. But there are some Broadway performers who have had very profound impacts on my life. For example, I met Lesli Margherita after Matilda last week, and she was ridiculously kind. She spoke to us as if we were her best friends, and chatted with us for a good few minutes. Then, after she signed, she reached out and gave me a hug, not the other way around. To have the chance to really show my appreciation to someone who I consider such an amazing performer and such an inspiration, and also to know that she is so kind in real life, made me a very, very happy girl. So I can understand why some people don't care about the stage door, but for me, I'm so happy to have a memory like that. And believe me - I will NEVER sell that autograph!

@Emmma Yeah, she was so awesome when I met her. She was like, "Let's do a selfie Cinderella Carly Rae Jepsen Stagedoor" Unfortuanely, she was in a rush, so we couldn't really chat Cinderella Carly Rae Jepsen Stagedoor

I still don't think an actor coming out through the stage door means they are "stagedoor"ing, merely leaving. I think stagedooring is exclusively reserved for the people waiting for the performers.

They don't have to leave through another door if they don't want to sign. They just don't have to sign. Many are happy to say thanks, smile, and walk on by...

There is a difference between coming out of the stage door and not stopping and coming out and stand at the stage door.

Apparently both will get you negative feedback on online message boards. Cinderella Carly Rae Jepsen Stagedoor
