Random thoughts- When the original play and later musical versions were done, the world was a simpler more innocent place. But even then they needed to keep the balance of 2 females playing off of each other in the roles to eliminate any sexuality. (ok willing suspension of disbelief but seriously how many kids in 1960's were familiar w lesbians?) You stick a serious male heartthrob in the Peter role and that dynamic changes and mid America does not want to be reminded about teenage(or preteen) sexuality in a fluffy little fantasy. (seen a show cld 16 and pregnant?) no they want Liesl singing "I'll wait a year or two". That being said- if they move fast they could get Jaden Smith who is skinny and whose features can still get away w youth. But that gets back to the whole sex thing again- really see this as problematic. maybe its just me?
"If Nolan Gould was not busy with 'Modern Family' I'd like to see what he could do with the role. I just don't think Chris Colfer is the best actor or singer. All he's been lately is overrated."
Please, no Chris Colfer. If they had done this a year and a half ago, Nolan Gould would have been an excellent choice but he has sprouted in the past year -- he is now taller than the Sarah Hyland and Ariel Winter who play his sisters -- and his voice has deepened considerably. He is now a young man, not a boy who wouldn't grow up.
Jaden Smith could absolutely work, I forgot about him. He's the perfect age, he has the body to pull it off, and he's a successful well known actor. Although the obvious question is, can he sing? When I think about it, I can see NBC considering Eddie Murphy for Captain Hook

The role of Peter requires more 'wire work' than any other role in the entire show, and it is therefore very unlikely that they will - or legally can - subject a minor to that amount of work because there is an increased potential for liability - should something go horribly wrong - attached to said amount of work.
They can get away with casting younger actors for Wendy, John, and Michael because the amount of 'wire work' required for those roles is fairly minimal, which means that the potential for liability should something go horribly wrong is also fairly minimal.
Although he's not a mass media name, Bobby Steggert would be perfect for the role of Peter. Although he's 33 years old, he doesn't look much more than 18. Besides that, he's got an incredible singing voice.
The role will probably go to some sitcom star, though.
Maybe they'll keep it a secret until the broadcast begins. Nobody will know (except the cast) who plays Peter until he makes his entrance. They can have the rest of the cast do promotional work and count on everybody wanting to see who the star is so that everyone will watch.
