That was fantastic. A very special video indeed. If only the whole footage of her performance existed! Except for Sweeney Todd none of her stage performances preserved on video in their entirety.
I loved watching her, watching herself as if she were almost studying her own performance. While viewing "Rose's Turn" she was actually mouthing lyrics. I was only 5 years old when GYPSY was revived for the very first time on Broadway so it was a real treat to see this myself. Great stuff!
What an amazing segment! Angela Lansbury truly is a class act. There should be a theatre named after her, hopefully while she's still with us.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
I loved how, as she was watching this, you could tell she was critiquing herself, practically giving herself notes. She wasn't watching those clips with a detached sense of nostalgia.
Is this the first glimpse of her performance in Gypsy that's out there? Don't you wish they would just skip the Michael Feinstein chat and show us the whole damn performance? Of course they cut the bows at the end of Rose's Turn without waiting for the applause to die down and see Angie bowing and bowing into the silence.
Angela's was the first Gypsy I saw on Broadway and it's easy to see why none of the others have ever bested her in my eyes.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

Thank you for sharing this! Loved watching Ms. Lansbury watch herself and enjoy every moment of it.
Btw, if you haven't read it (and most of you probably have), the coffee table book "Broadway Day and Night" contains the story of how Angela Lansbury became involved with the revival of Gypsy. It's pretty funny and worth the price of the whole book.

Professionally shot, yes. But we're lucky enough to also have full peeformances of MAME ('83) A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, DEUCE, BLITHE SPIRIT and THE BEST MAN on video.

OMG! For real?! I would've love to see them. Are they on YouTube? Because I've only seen bits and pieces of those shows over there. I've been lucky enough to see her in a Little Night Music, Blithe Spirit and Driving Miss Daisy, but to see Ms. Lansbury in Mame would've been a dream.
