"On May 17, the Administration Committee of the American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards® announced that they will award a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre to the Midtown North and South New York City Police Precincts. This honor is in recognition of the precincts' many years of outstanding service to Manhattan's Theatre District. The precincts were selected by the Administration Committee for the Tony Honor in April, along with three other honorees: the Alliance for Resident Theatres New York (A.R.T./New York); B.H. Barry and Tom Viola.

The Midtown North & South Precincts serve and protect the area of Midtown Manhattan. The Precincts work collaboratively with the Theatre Owners and have formed an important liaison with stage doormen and front-of-house staff of the theatres to ensure not only the safety and well-being of the millions of Broadway theatre patrons and tourists in the Theatre District, but for all of those who work in the theatre community.

Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, said in a statement, "We had decided on this particular Tony Honor well before the May 1st incident in Broadway/Times Square which brought the NYPD's skills to the forefront of a very public stage, so our desire to award them for their consistent day-to-day dedication proved even more appropriate. Since the New York City Police Department is a city agency, they had to first insure that they could accept this recognition. Today, that approval was received and the Tony Awards are thrilled that they will join their fellow recipients at the Tony Awards on Sunday, June 13 at Radio City Music Hall."

The Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre were established in 1990 and are awarded annually to institutions, individuals and/or organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in theatre, but are not eligible in any of the established Tony Award categories."

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

I hope they don't rescind the award when they realize that their uniforms are nearly identical to the ones they wore last season.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

HILARIOUS! Bravo, that was quite witty!

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

That's terrific. They do indeed play a significant role on Broadway--especially those shows with stars in them.

Awesome givesmevoice, LOL!!

That Tony Honor is a great gesture, for the most part policing in the city is a thankless job.
