Christian Borle would have been PERFECT casting as Barrie, who was a very moody, very eccentric and very strange man. He had wild mood swings, a bitingly sarcastic sense of humor that could reduce a person to tears, and is rumored to have never consummated his marriage, which is why it ended in scandal. When watching the movie FINDING NEVERLAND, I was shocked at how bad Depp was at catching Barrie's egocentricities and even more shocked at how they changed the actual facts with abandon. When the true story of JMB and his relationship with Llwn. Davies family is so full of odd (almost eerie) coincidences, and tragic heartbreak, why would someone rewrite it to do nothing more than turn it into a conventional love story, complete with a strapping sex idol as the main character? When life is stranger than fiction, why resort to writing fiction?
This strange story was told much better, with an almost nitpicky attention to historical accuracy, in the BBC mini-series JM Barrie and the Lost Boys, with Ian Holm almost becoming Barrie right there on the screen.
This scene from the show begins almost boringly mundane, but grows in its intensity and strangeness, and is more interesting than anything in Finding Neverland. It is hard to tell whether the man is manipulating the child, or the child is manipulating the man. But it seems to capture perfectly Barrie's strange closeness to Michael Llwn. Davies. Watch how they both become uncomfortable when Mary Barrie and Mr. Canaan (whom Mrs. Barrie eventually had a scandalous affair with) enter the room.

There is also a series of videos about Barrie called "J.M. Barrie's relationship with the Davies boys" which uses scenes from series.
Here is the first one. (The actor playing young George is Ian Holm's own son.)
