I think Soo will end up in leading. All awards for the off-Broadway production had her in leading. On top of that, her role may not seem leading from stage time, but her role in the story is absolutely critical . Goldsberry is clearly supporting and she's giving a performance of a lifetime as Angelica Schuyler and deserves to be noted for that.

Odom is trickier for me. The role of Burr is the second largest and his presence is felt throughout the entire show.  I don't know how the committee will go on that. As it's been said, it seems like he would be a lock for a nomination based on his reviews and the general acclaim.

In terms of featured male roles in Hamilton, I want Daveed Diggs there! His Jefferson is one of my favorite performances in the past 5 years. He hits the humor in it so well and has great chemistry on stage.

Definitely agreed re Diggs, especially in Act 2. I'm also hoping for a Christopher Jackson nomination.

As for Soo, her role has the impact of a lead role but she does not have the consistent presence in the show that Mueller, Benanti, Erivo and I'm assuming Salonga and McDonald have. There is no way she would win. Soo being in featured would be the best case scenario for everybody: Soo gets to start her career off as a Tony winner and Hamilton gets to add another award to its tally.

Odom, Jr. I feel would get nominated in either category (a lock in featured, might be tougher in lead) but still, I can't see him taking down Burstein or Walker at the moment. So again, best case scenario for everybody would be having him in featured.

I think Soo will be in leading (I'd be SHOCKED if she wasn't. She's clearly the female lead.). I don't think she's going to win in either category-they are both very tough. (I suspect Lea Salonga may be featured given what I have seen/heard of Allegiance.) Renee Elise Goldsberry will be there, as will Jennifer Hudson (and all the other Color Purple ladies except for Cynthia Erivo) and perhaps Krysta Rodriguez (who is supposed to be utterly incredible). In leading, Jessie Mueller, Laura Benanti, Audra McDonald and Cynthia Erivo are very strong coming out of the gate. We'll see.

Leslie Odom, Jr., IMO, does indeed belong in leading-he's the narrator and it is through his eyes that we see much of this unfold. I would love for him to win...he is able to give Burr (usually considered a 'villain' if you read enough biographies) a sympathetic edge. I think he's delivering the best performance in the show (largely an ensemble piece...and for that reason I suspect it'll nab a single acting Tony, MAYBE two...Daveed in featured. However, I still think George Takei may be able to win there.)

Jesus Christ Superstar is told through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, and Ben Vereen & Josh Young were both nominated for Featured Actor in a Musical for their performances.

And isn't George Takei the star of Allegiance?

People are really underestimating Jane Krakowski's chances of getting a nomination as featured for SHE LOVES ME. She is note-perfect on the YouTube recording of the benefit reading and by all accounts was just as great live. The role of Ilona is one of the best character roles in the musical theatre canon too. I imagine the featured actress in a musical race this coming year will have more than 5 names.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

This season is shaping up NICELY already. And I'm sure there will be more surprises to come as we enter into fall.

George Takei is definitely a featured role unless they've changed the show a lot since San Diego

"If only we could get zero pinto things, that'd be fvcking perfect.

If her acting in THE COLOR PURPLE is anything like her film acting, Jennifer Hudson can keep that mantle dirty and full of clutter."

This quote is the best!!! It had me rolling on the floor :)

No one seems to have mentioned Ana Villafañe in the best actress category. She is, after all, playing the lead role in On Your Feet. Was her performance that underwhelming for those of you who caught her in the Chicago run?

I thought her singing and dancing were great but her acting is just passable. She certainly gives an enjoyable performance but with the stiff competition I think we're all expecting in that category it will be tough. If these other superstars live up to our expectations she's going to have a hard time getting into the mix, although it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility. I wouldn't say her performance was "that underwhelming" but I'd anticipate it will take a lot more than not being underwhelming to score a nom for any of the categories this year. I'd predict it will take a pretty stellar performance.

So glad Leslie Odom, Jr is in leading. That's where he belongs and he deserves to win.

Don't think lead benefits Soo. Too many other strong lead women this year, and a good place to give an award to a show that is not Hamilton. I find her to be the weak link in the cast anyway.

^Or they could give Leading Actor to someone else like Danny Burstein.

As much as I'd love to see Soo win a Tony for Eliza (personally I thought she was the best out of the entire cast), I don't think she would have won in Featured or Leading. Featured would have split the votes with her and Renee. It will be a shame for her if Hamilton wins Leading Actor, Featured Actor and Featured Actress and not Leading Actress as it may very well do. Of course, she will be able to console herself with the fact that she's in Hamilton.

Would love any and all updates from the experts on this sites picks for 2016 nominees for best musical,

now that the winter shows are out?

my picks in order of most likely seem to be:

Hamilton(duh)

Shuffle Along

Waitress

On Your Feet

Pushing up against on your feet for the fourth spot could be:

School of Rock-throw ALW a bone at twilight of career? certainly strong reviews

Bright Star-different enough music to help it get a nom?

American Psycho-could be dark horse if they have improved show since london-fantastic cast!

Seemig not as likely in contention based on bway and out of town reviews

Tuck Everlasting-somehow just doesnt sound like nominee based on reviews

Allegiance-pretty mixed reviews

anything else likely to pop into a spring 2016 broadway launch?

Well, here' s what's happened so far.

  • Hamilton has continued it's reign as #1 musical. All categories are possible to win for them.
  • King Charles III and View From The Bridge will have a good shot at each category of play.
  • School of Rock and On Your Feet are in a similar place and will probably fight for the 4th nomination
  • The Humans and Eclipsed's Broadway transfers will tighten the Best New Play race.
  • Allegiance, Amazing Grace, China Doll, Old Times and Sylvia all are probably out of Best Musical/Play/Revival contention.

Right now I think Cynthia Erivo has a very good shot at the leading actress Tony. So many powerhouse ladies still to come this season that category will be impossible to predict, but her performance is really amazing.

Putting Soo in the Leading Actress category is pretty much a joke (she has no chance of winning). This actually puts her chances of even getting nominated very uncertain.

I think it will be Hamilton up against School of Rock, American Psycho, and either Waitress or Tuck Everlasting. Unless they decide Shuffle Along is a new musical, but I feel like it will be considered a revival.

If Phillipa had been put in featured, there is a strong chance that her and Renee would split the votes and neither of them would win. Renee has a strong chance of winning in featured without Phillipa there. I would be very surprised if Phillipa wasn't nominated in leading, she is still giving a brilliant performance in the most talked about show of the year.

Phillipa probably will be nominated, but I don't think she should be. I don't think she could have been any blander or less memorable.
