Rarely does it happen that a national or world premiere occurs in community theatre. However, as I previewed local summer theatre in June, there were actually several instances of that in Birmingham. Even more rare is the opportunity to stage a premiere with easy access to the playwright, even having the playwright in on casting and some rehearsals. Such is the case with South City's NEST OF ANGELS.

Written by Birmingham's own Alan Litsey, NEST OF ANGELS is a funny, interesting look at human interaction, set in the world of theatre. With only two characters, it was crucial to have top notch performers in these roles.

Christie Connolly and Reese Thompson certainly fill the bill. Director Sue Ellen Gerrells calls them two of the most gifted actors she has had the pleasure of working with. Willing to take chances and make bold choices, Mrs. Gerrells has admitted that these two have made her job much easier.

Ms. Connolly plays Clara, a young playwright determined to get her work produced at any cost. Mr. Thompson as Dennis is the overworked artistic director who doesn't have time or the inclination to help Clara. Not easily dissuaded, Clara begins showing her true self in order to get what she wants with interesting results.

Connolly and Thompson have a special bond with playwright Litsey, since both were his students at Birmingham-Southern College. During this process they were able to confer and really hone in on what the playwright meant and wanted. That is a luxury few actors are privy to.

This fast paced war of words (and actions) is hilarious from start to surprising finish. If you are unsure about seeing a new work, don't be. Having appeared in a premiere and working with its playwright on another new production several years ago, as well as sitting in on a few rehearsals of NEST OF ANGELS, I can assure you that you will be entertained and can boast of being in on the ground floor of a new hit.

If you are still hesitant, try SCT's new promotion this Saturday, August 8 where you can see the show and then pay what you think it is worth on the way out. But Director Gerrells says bring your checkbook, because if you are honest, this one is worth a lot!

NEST OF ANGELS is opening this Friday, August 7 and runs through August 15, with 8pm performances on August 7-8 and 13-15. One matinee on Sunday, August 9 is at 2pm. Call 205-621-2128 or go to southcitytheatre.com for reservations or more information.
