‘The curtain of our eyelids opens: where is the stage: outside or inside?’ The prologue to Bluebeard’s Castle invites us to see the work as an introspective, personal, and metaphysical adventure. This journey, given rhythm by the opening of the castle doors, provides Bartók with an opportunity to write evocative and entrancing music which will unfold under the trusty baton of our Music Director, Alain Altinoglu. In the theatre, the choreographer, director, and visual artist Gisèle Vienne questions the muted violence animating the accursed part of our psyche. Bartók’s one-act opera will be preceded by Ligeti’s Lux Aeterna. This work for sixteen voices offers the listener an ‘other-worldly’ experience: it is as if a voice is given to the invisible that inhabits Bluebeard’s castle, in which, according to the philosopher George Steiner, the last door opens to reveal ‘realities which are beyond the reach of human comprehension and control’.
