An exploration of place, language and migrant-settler positionalities, House of Mother Tongue will be presented at Footscray Community Arts, whilst a second exhibition, House of Other Tongue, will be presented at West Space Inc.
Created particularly for the Vietnamese community and their allies, House of Mother Tongue, House of Other Tongue addresses settler colonial legacies of monolingualism and its impact on minority languages, power and subjectivity. It will feature works by Hoang Tran Nguyen emanating from the community archive of campaign materials as well as a commissioned work by artist and language advocate Vicki Couzens.
House of Mother Tongue, House of Other Tongue will provide a unique perspective into the entangled reality of urban development, colonial language histories and forms of language interdiction.
From 11 - 27 November 2022, Neighbourhood will celebrate place, community and humanity in Melbourne’s West with 18 days of heartfelt performance, exhibitions and experiences.
This multi artform festival, co-presented by Footscray Community Arts and The Substation, beckons local residents and those from postcodes beyond to immerse themselves in a deeply-engaging program, spotlighting the communities that make up Western Melbourne’s social fabric.
