Modern-day masculinity is interrogated in new performance art work by Matthew Adey, Homme, at Northcote Town Hall from Tuesday 29 September - Saturday 3 October, 2015 as part of the 2015 Melbourne Fringe Festival. Inspired by the birth of his daughter and the patriarchy she will inevitably navigate in adulthood, Adey will bravely examine his own masculinity, sexuality and home life with brutal (often humiliating) honesty.
An exploration of the contemporary Australian male, Homme is a dark and satirical abstraction of the mundanity of domestic life and the clichés heteronormative behaviour and relationships. These familiar themes are then twisted and subverted by 'the man' and 'the woman' on the stage through a series of vignettes, bodily humiliation... and a washing machine. Under the guise of House of Vnholy ["Unholy"], Homme has been created in collaboration with performance maker and choreographer Natalie Abbott (MAXIMUM, Physical Fractals). The work is a continuation of the collective's debut performance installation MONO, which opened to rave reviews in Adelaide this year and at the Abbottsford Convent this month.House of Vnholy is also known for its design collaborations across dance and theatre, including creating set and costume designs for many of the burgeoning and successful Melbourne artists such as Shian Law, Atlanta Eke, Natalie Abbott, Melanie Lane, MKA and Elbow Room.
Homme is presented by Darebin Arts' Speakeasy program of independent theatre, the home of cutting-edge performing arts north of the Yarra. Presenting a year-round program of new, exciting and dangerous theatre productions from around Australia, Speakeasy seeks to enliven the greater Melbourne area with world-class art and performances. "[MONO is] a thoroughly disturbing but highly impactful and visually mesmerizing experience."Videos
