During a break from recording, Toby appeared Off Broadway in Paul Scott Goodman's Production of "Alive in the World" with Adam Pascal (Rent), Melissa Errico(My Fair Lady), and Lea Michele (Spring Awakening) among others. She recently recorded the song "Waiting" which was featured as the closing finale for the play. That song will be released on itunes August 6." Toby's critically acclaimed albums have garnered her a following among musicians and critics, as well as a wide and diverse audience worldwide. She has toured the country extensively, having appeared with such artists as Rob Thomas, Jewel, James Blunt, Gavin DeGraw, and on one memorable evening, Prince, who caught her debut performance on the David Letterman Show, and asked her to open for him in front of over 50,000 at the famed Rose Garden arena. Needless to say, this was a dream come true for Toby, a longtime fan.Growing up outside of Philadelphia, Lightman went her own way when it came to music, listening to hip-hop and rock, but also falling in love with Stevie Wonder and devouring the Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James records in her father's oldies-dominated collection. Encouraged by her high school music teacher, Toby started to train her voice by working in various choral groups. She made her solo debut at her high school graduation, cutting loose on Paul Simon's neo-gospel anthem "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and bringing the teary audience to their feet.
After graduation from high school, Toby attended University of Wisconsin. She started performing in local jazz clubs and bars on the East Coast over school breaks, as well as honing her skills in the Madison, Wisconsin's bar scene. While in college, Toby took what she learned from being classically trained on the violin as a child, and taught herself to play the guitar. She started writing songs of her own shortly after that. Toby moved to New York after graduation and took a job bartending while trying to figure out how to break into the music business, with nothing but a guitar-case full of songs, and no connections in the music world. Within 6 months of serving cosmopolitan's and chardonnay's she scored a Manager, production deal, and a record deal.
