Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group recently published: The Story of Black Military Officers, 1861-1948 examining the little known history of black military officers in the United States Armed Forces. The book, which has been selected as an Association of the United States Army Book, offers fascinating historical facts about the struggles and triumphs of black commissioned officers in every war, conflict and military engagement between 1861 and 1948.

This event will include a reading from selected passages from the book and a distinguished panel discussing the book, will be held in the Holeman Lounge at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Saturday afternoon, 26 April. Introduced with a Foreword by Major General H. R. McMaster, Commander of the United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, The Story of Black Military Officers is the first complete and conclusive work to specifically examine the history of black commissioned officers and acquaints readers with an understanding of the struggles they endured to join the military as leaders. From the black officers in the American Civil War Native Guards of Louisiana first recruited for the Confederacy, to the difficulties blacks faced to earn military commissions well into World War II, the book chronicles the challenges and achievements of black military officers from the American Civil War to President Harry S. Truman's Executive Order 9981 issued in July 1948, providing for equal opportunity in the Armed Forces. The book has seventeen chapters to include two specifically addressing the service academies and separate chapters addressing the sea services, women in the military, and the Air Corps, which became the Air Force in 1947. This book is the story of those black American men and women, who by their own merit, gain, and hard work, and with support from many other Americans along the way, became commissioned military officers.
