Stella Adler Studio of Acting Presents 6th Annual Harold Clurman Festival

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting will hold the 6th annual Harold Clurman Festival of the Arts this month, bringing artists and activists together to discuss the relationship between art and social activism. Events will take place from September 19 through September 26.

This year's festival includes an original avant-garde theater performance featuring Canadian dance icon Margie Gillis. Other events include symposiums, panel discussions and a film screening. Participating artists and activists include Gordon Davidson, Jim Houghton, Anne Bogart, Todd London and many more.

Over the last six years, the Harold Clurman Festival has brought together artists such as Alvin Epstein, Edward Albee, Melissa Fitzgerald, Whoopi Goldberg, Bill T. Jones, Frances Lucerna, Winter Miller, Rosie Perez, Phylicia Rashad, Roy Scheider, Jonathan Demme, Anna Deavere Smith, Mira Sorvino and Jeffrey Wright.

Symposium: How to build a Non-Profit Theater
Panelists include Gordon Davidson, founding Artistic Director of the Center Theater Group; Jim Houghton, founding Artistic Director of the Signature Theater; Anne Bogart, founding Artistic Director of Siti Company; moderated by Colin Greer, playwright and president of the New World Foundation.

September 20, 21, and 22, 7pm
Untitled Theater Piece by Margie Gillis and Betsy Parrish
A new, avant-garde theater piece by Margie Gillis (Member of the Order of Canada, Knight of the Ordre national du Québec; Canadian Cultural Ambassador; Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award from the Governor General's Performing Arts Award Foundation) and Broadway veteran Betsy Parris. This untitled physical theater work was commissioned by and created at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting.

September 26, 7:15pm
Film Screening and Symposium: Acting Together on the World Stage
A screening of the documentary film Acting Together on the World Stage followed by a symposia discussion with Zlata Filipovic, artist and author of Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo and co-author of Stolen Voices: Young People's War Diaries, from World War I to Iraq; Todd London, Artistic Director of New Dramatists and author of The Artistic Home and more.

About Harold Clurman
Harold Clurman (1901-1980) remains one of the most influential figures in American Theater. His extraordinary commitment to great art and social progress made him a unique and highly sensitive producer, director and drama critic. Clurman co-founded New York City's Group Theater along with Lee Strasberg and Cheryl Crawford and directed over forty Broadway productions including Eugene O'Neil's Touch of the Poet and Arthur Miller's Incident at Vichy. The Harold Clurman Festival is fundraiser for the Stella Adler Studio and its Outreach Division, which provides free theater education to New York City public school students.
