Robert DeNiro to Helm Broadway Musical A BRONX TALE
The Bronx is coming to Broadway! As first reported on Showbiz411, Academy Award-winning actor Robert DeNiro is set to direct a musical stage production of A BRONX TALE, a film he helmed back in 1993. Tommy Mottola, who will produce the show, revealed the news to the site's Roger Friedman.
Chazz Palminteri, who penned and appeared in the original film as well as the Broadway play, is currently writing the book for the upcoming stage musical. Bon Jovi's David Bryan, who wrote the Tony-award winning music for "Memhis" will write the music for the project, while Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Addams Family) will take on the choreography.
Mattola is currently working on a musical version of Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly," directed by Bill T. Jones. The production is scheduled to hit Broadway next winter.
The 1993 crime drama 'A Bronx Tale' was set in The Bronx during the turbulent era of the 1960s. It was the directorial debut of De Niro and follows a young Italian-American teenager as his path in life is guided by two father figures, played by De Niro and Chazz Palminteri. It also includes a brief appearance by Joe Pesci. It was written by Palminteri, based partially upon his childhood. The film grossed over $17 million domestically in the box office.
