The New York Philharmonic has launched the podcast Listening Through Time, an intimate conversation about how performances have evolved from one generation of Philharmonic players to the next. In each episode, a Philharmonic musician (current or retired) joins Philharmonic Archivist / Historian Barbara Haws in listening to and comparing the Orchestra's performances from different eras.

The first episode features former Principal Trumpet Philip Smith talking about how Philharmonic performances of the opening trumpet solo in Mahler's Fifth Symphony - played on this season's Opening Gala Concert and opening subscription program - changed over time. Upcoming episodes will feature conversations with former Principal Clarinet Stanley Drucker, Principal Cello Carter Brey, Principal Trombone Joseph Alessi, bassist Orin O'Brien, Principal Librarian Lawrence Tarlow, and others.

Listening Through Time is available on iTunes and archives.nyphil.org/podcast, which also features photographs and detailed background research for each episode as well as related scores, parts, and printed programs from the New York Philharmonic Leon Levy Digital Archives.
