NCRC and The Old Globe to Present Anna Deavere Smith in 'NOTES FROM THE FIELD'

National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC) and The Old Globe will co-host "Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education" written and performed by Anna Deavere Smith for one night only on Monday, June 6 at The Old Globe on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center.

Tickets go on sale to the general public starting Wednesday, May 4 at 12 p.m. Single tickets are $25 each. Honorary Committee tickets are available at $100 and include preferred seating and program listing. A portion of the proceeds from the Honorary Committee tickets will also underwrite tickets for students and faculty to participate in the one night only event. For one night only, MacArthur award-winner Anna Deavere Smith will come to San Diego with her compelling new project examining one of our country's most pressing issues. "In Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education," Smith turns her attention to "the school-to-prison pipeline" and performs striking portraits culled from interviews she conducted with more than 200 individuals across the nation affected by the pipeline's devastating policies - capturing the dynamics of a rapidly shifting social issue through her trademark performance technique. The performance is a part of The Anna Deavere Smith Pipeline Project.

Anna Deavere Smith is an internationally recognized theater artist and is perhaps best known for her television and movie roles in "The West Wing," "Nurse Jackie," "The American President," and most recently, "Black-ish." Smith has won numerous professional accolades, including a MacArthur Foundation 'Genius Grant,' a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, a Tony Award nomination, and a National Humanities Medal from President Obama in 2012. Smith has been most influential in pioneering the techniques of what is now popularly known as "verbatim theater," the performance of testimony from interviews with real people to explore issues of race, community, and identity. She is currently a university professor at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

This event is co-hosted by NCRC and The Old Globe and is made possible through the generous support of The California Endowment, Price Philanthropies, San Diego Gas & Electric, KPBS and an amazing team of local individual supporters.

NCRC provides the resources, training, and expertise to help people, organizations and communities around the world manage and solve conflicts with civility. Their new initiative, "Avoiding the Pipeline to Prison," helps protect the nation's vulnerable youth by redirecting young people to productive and positive life paths. NCRC partners with schools, juvenile justice organizations and government agencies to offer communication and mediation training.
