Maurice Nachtigal Shares Journey to the Other Side of the Iron Curtain

"From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an Iron Curtain has descended across the Continent." This famous line was from former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in a speech at Fulton, Missouri, US, on March 5, 1946. This political, military and ideological barrier was created by the Soviet Union to seal off itself and its satellites from contact with the West. In 1980, author Maurice Nachtigal, a physician, managed to break away from the Iron Curtain and resume his life on the other side of it, in the United States. He reveals his remarkable story in "An Iron Curtain Breakaway."

Nachtigal thinks that the journey of his life is not different from that of many Romanians who lived in the shadow of the Iron Curtain, under the repressive communist regime, and ended up seeking to leave that country by any means to take refuge somewhere on the other side of the world. His story, like that of his fellow countrymen, is that of his daily life, with its ups and downs and the personal troubles and deeds, that was many times shaped by the Big Brother.

This book chronicles his life during the communist regime in Romania. For 47 years, he survived the fascist dictatorship, World War II and the communist regime. He tried to stay and make a life for himself and his family. But eventually, he realized that he is ruining their lives and jeopardizing the future of his children. His defection was a very risky and painful endeavor, but it is a decision that gave him a chance to resume his life on the other side of the Iron Curtain.

"An Iron Curtain Breakaway" is a legacy that Nachtigal wishes to leave behind for his grandchildren, a recollection of one man's remarkable journey through a very difficult life.
