MOTHER, A LA CARTE to Play United Solo This Month

Mother, a la Carte, written and performed by Liberty Des Roches will be performed on October 22, 2016 as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival at Theatre Row, 410 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036.

Mother is the name for God on the lips and hearts of all children. Mother was an all knowing supernatural creature with eyes in the back of her head. She performed miracles and drove me crazy with her rules. God, I miss my Mom.

Mother, a la carte is a one woman play that explores the daily rituals and perceived miracles that we believe our mothers perform on a daily basis. Using food from her Mennonite childhood, the rituals of making the perfect pot of tea (and at least one bottle of wine) Liberty Des Roches tells the unbelievable story of a Mother who appears to have everything miraculously under control. As the main character kneads bread and drinks her wine (at the same time!), she works her way through the death of not only her Mother, but her faith in God simultaneously.

Mother, a la Carte is written and performed by Liberty Des Roches. The play was created from the many stories that were shared from other women from all over the world: Britain, Spain, Brazil, Canada, and Bahrain. Their stories, while having different names for food and ritual, were so incredibly similar. Mother, a la carte was originally performed in Word of Mouth Café, Edinburgh, Scotland to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day 2011. This sell-out show received overwhelmingly positive reviews from the Scottish press. There was a second production in February 2015 in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the Irish Association's beautiful little Tara Players Theatre.
