The First International Biennial of Contemporary Art, Cartagena de Indias is now accepting applications for COLOMBIA HOY, a major museum exhibition to be held for the duration of the Biennial from February 7 - April 7, 2014.
In conjunction with the First International Biennial of Contemporary Art, and held in the iconic Museo de Arte Moderno de Cartagena, COLOMBIA HOY is a juried contemporary art exhibition curated by a team of national and international curators. Participation is only open to Colombian artists living in Colombia or abroad, and foreign artists who have had legal residence in Colombia for at least five years. Applications will be accepted through August 13, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. Colombian time.
The Selection Committee will include Miguel Gonzalez, Mariangela Mendez, Gabriela Rangel and Stephanie Rosenthal, Artists may apply by visitingwww.biaci.org/artista, and downloading the application form. Applicants are advised to review the exhibition guidelines and follow the available Step-by-Step Guides for assistance in the application process. All application forms and materials should be zipped and uploaded to the dropbox listed in the Step-by-Step Guide, with the exception of video submissions.
Artists who are selected to participate in the Biennial will be listed on the Biennial's website (www.biaci.org) during the month of September 2013. The selected artists will receive via email a formal notification of their acceptance.

SELECTION COMMITTEE:MIGUEL GONZÁLEZ: Professor, Art Critic and Curator. Member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA). Since 1985 he has been Curator at the Museum of Modern Art La Tertulia, Cali, a position he currently performs. He has been member of the jury in the most important events of visual arts of Colombia, such as the National Exhibitions, the Biennials of the Museum of Modern Art of Bogota and the Ravinovich Exhibition of the Museum of Modern Art of Medellin, as well as various international exhibitions. He has been guest curator and consultant at the Biennials of Venice, Sao Paulo, Valparaiso, Cuenca, Havana, La Paz, the Photography Biennial FotoFest, Houston (1992), Havana Biennial (1997) and the Sao Paulo Biennial (1998).
He writes about art in newspapers and specialized magazines since 1970: Arte Plural (Caracas), Artinf (Buenos Aires), Atlántica (Spain), Poliéster (Mexico), Vie des Arts (Canada), Next Level (England), Arte en Colombia, Art-Nexus, Arte Internacional and Revista de Arte y Arquitectura (Colombia).
He has written eight books, such as Interviews, Art and Culture of Latin-America and Colombia, Latin-America, Sights and Glances, 2005; and has been co-author of several others such as Performance and Action Art in Latin-America, Mexico, 2005. He has received numerous awards.
MARIANGELA MENDEZ: Mariangela Mendez is the director of the curatorial investigation Project for La Oreja Roja, for the 13 Regional Artist Salons in Colombia, with the ministry of culture and she is a member of the consultant panel for the Illy Sustainable Art Laboratory. She completed her studies at the Universityy of Los Andes, Bogota and has a Masters in Curating from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, New York.
She has worked as assistant in the National and Regional Salons of the Colombian Ministry of Cultura and has been consultant to the Gerencia of Visual Arts of the IDCT, curator of the project for Artecamara, Bogota Chamber of Comerce, and since 2006 is associate professor of humanities at the Universidad de los Andes. She has curated numerous exhibitions such as Hiperrealism in Colombia in the 70's, El Dorado: Recent Dialogues betweenColombia and Mexico, and Oscar Munoz. She regularly writes for Arteria and other art publications. She has received numerous prizes among them the Fulbright grant for curators.
GABRIELA RANGEL: Gabriela Rangel, Director of Visual Arts at the Americas Society, holds an M.A. in curatorial studies from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, an M.A. in media and communications studies from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Caracas, and a B.A. in film studies from the International Film School at San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. She is currently the director of Visual Arts and curator at the Americas Society. Prior to this position she was assistant curator of Latin American art and programs coordinator for the International Center for the Arts of the Americas at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
She has curated exhibitions on the work of Marta Minujin, Gordon Matta Clark, Paula Trope, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Juan Downey, and Dias & Riedweg, among others. Rangel has also made catalogue contributions to Arturo Herrera (Transnocho Arte Contacto, 2009),Arte no es vida (El Museo del Barrio, 2008), Da Adversidade Vivemos: Artistes d'Amérique latine (Musee d' Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 2001) and Liliana Porter (Centro de Arte Recoleta, Buenos Aires) and co-edited A Principality on its Own (Americas Society-David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard, 2006).
STEPHANIE ROSENTHAL: Stephanie Rosenthal , Chief Curator at the Hayward Gallery, London since December 2007, worked previously at Haus der Kunst in Munich for more than 10 years. She has been assistant curator and co-curator of highly-praised survey exhibitions including Night (1998) and Objects in 20th Century Art (2000). She was appointed curator for modern and contemporary art in 2000 and curated the acclaimed exhibition Paul McCarthy. LaLa Land Parody Paradise which toured to the Whitechapel Gallery in 2005. Rosenthal wrote her doctoral thesis on 'The Colours Black in the New York School: Robert Rauschenberg, Ad Reinhardt, Frank Stella and Mark Rothko' and she curated a show on the subject entitled Black Paintings. : She has also curated Walking in my mind (summer 2009), which explored the inner workings of the artist's imagination through the medium of large-scale installation art; Move: Choreographing you a show about the relationship between visual art and dance (2010); Pipilotti Rist: Eyeball Massage (2011); and most recently Art of Change: New Directions from China (2012). She is currently working on a Retrospective of Ana Mendieta, due to open in autumn 2013.
Rosenthal has contributed essays for books and periodicals on a wide range of contemporary artists and has been part of international advisory boards and symposia about modern and contemporary art since 1996.
