The Metropolitan Room recently announced its September events. They are as follows:

Jane Scheckter “Play A Simple Melody” is a tribute to Irving Berlin.  “The title”, says Jane, “is totally misleading, because nothing about the man or his music was simple. As Jerome Kern wrote, ‘Berlin has no place in American music; he is American music’.”Jane has performed with her trio at the Iridium as well as Danny’s, the FireBird CafÈ, and The Ballroom in New York, and jazz clubs and solo concerts in L.A., Paris, and on the French Riviera. She performed with Peter Cincotti in "Our Sinatra"and was guest soloist with the Springfield (MA) Symphony’s pops orchestra, with Mike Renzi and Chip Jackson backing her in a jazz concert. She headlined regularly at the July "Jazz Nights" series at the Hotel Majestic in Cannes. Early in her career she sang backup on Barry Manilow’s first album, and appeared at the legendary Reno Sweeny’s and Grand Finale. In 1978, she toured as one-third of Tuxedo Junction, the group that had the number one disco album in the U.S.A., and appeared on every music program from American Bandstand to Midnight Special. Returning to New York, she spent ten years in the studios singing jingles for products ranging from Crest toothpaste to Lee Jeans.Jane won a Bistro Award in 1996 as Outstanding Female Jazz Vocalist and has been nominated three times for MAC awards for Outstanding Female Vocalist.She has recorded three CDs -- "I’ve Got My Standards" in 1987 for DRG and "Double Standards" with Mike Renzi, her accompanist of 13 years, Jay Leonhart and Grady Tate. Her 2003 CD "In Times Like These" features Tedd Firth, Jay Leonhart, Joe Cocuzzo and Scott Kreitzer. Her web site is Singjanesing.com.

Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. “Twisted“ has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler.

Meg Flather “More View Points” Meg Flather, known to millions as one of home shopping television’s most popular on-air personalities, who has appeared on QVC, Shop NBC, HSN, TVSN (Australia ), and The Shopping Channel ( Canada ) as one of TV’s most successful cosmetic salespersons,has enjoyed a life-long parallel career as a singer and songwriter.  With more than two decades writing and performing, Flather boasts five albums, all of which are commercially available via www.amazon.com and www.theorchard.com.  A member of ASCAP, her original compositions are published by Margaret Hall Music. “More View Points” is an expression of the outspoken Flather’s personality.  Laced together with humorous snippets of her life story, including a childhood spent in the Philippines where her father was a director for the US Peace Corps during the Kennedy Administration, “More Viewpoints” celebrates the women who inspired Flather to write and perform music – Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Annie Lenox, and Suzanne Vega – together with many of her own compositions.  Her show blends the genres of folk, pop, jazz, and the music hall with an ongoing commentary heavy on punchlines. Years after returning from the Philippines, Flather studied at New York ’s famous High School of Music and Art in Harlem. As a singer and songwriter, Flather is a two-time Backstage Bistro Award-winner. Her original music is heard in the soundtracks of theatrical films, including one that bowed at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Off-Broadway play, “Acts of Love,” and “A secret Better Not Kept,” a multi-media project to prevent teen suicide.  She has also performed as a special guest at the Tribeca and Vermont Film Festivals.  As a comedic actress Flather has been seen on NBC’s “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and the syndicated “Rosie O’Donnell Show.”

Joelle Lurie Joelle Lurie is delighted to be returning to The Metropolitan Room with her show, "This Time Tomorrow" after 2 sold out shows this past spring.  This song by The Kinks will begin a night of songs from the past and present exploring how dreams shift, expectations change, and that love and living in the moment is what we all need to remember.  Songs will include standards
from the Great American Songbook, as well as Sondheim, re-imagined pop tunes, and originals. She was most recently seen playing the role of Shawntel/Eve in 'Jerry Springer the Opera' in Boston, her hometown.  Please join her with her trio, led by Music Director Matt Van Brink, for a night of jazz standards with a splash of pop and a pop of sass.  Directed by Amy Rogers.

Jaron Vesley “Swingers and Standards” Jaron Vesely briefly steps away from his boy band duties with the wildly popular, Bistro Award-winning (and hilarious!) Fabulous Pink Flamingos to front a hot jazz combo and luxuriate in a “provocative” song list ranging from the Great American Songbook to contemporary pop - delivered in a swinging jazz setting. Featuring an exciting assortment of music from songwriters and artists including: The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jeff Buckley, Lerner & Loewe, Joni Mitchell, Thelonious Monk, Rodgers & Hart, Three Dog Night, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Steven Tyler and (yes) Pink! Tom Rocco “My Big Fat Prop 8 Wedding” This  evening of songs (some familiar, some lesser-known) and light-hearted anecdotes  follows Broadway vet Tom Rocco’s unconventional path to wedded bliss. And by the  end of the night you’ll likely ask yourself: “Is it really all that  unconventional? It sounds just like my (fill in with the adjective/expletive of  your choice) marriage.”

Gay Marshall “Piaf, Queen of Heart” Gay Marshall is bringing her sensational Piaf concert back to the Metropolitan Room for a 5 show run – the last three Tuesdays in Sept at 7:00 and the first two Thursdays in Oct at 7:30 - with the same masterful musicians as last fall : Eric Svejcar on piano, Steve Gilewski on bass, Deni Bonet on violin, Bill Schimmel on accordion, and Peter Lewy on Cello. Although she’s had a blues and jazz band, done many American musicals and loves singing almost every style of music, this material along with the songs of Jacques Brel has remained her favorite. The show features the usual suspects a la "Vie En Rose" to "No Regrets", but also includes some lesser known gems like "The Right to Love" and "Avec Ce Soleil". To heighten their availability to an English speaking audience, she will be performing an original mix of French and English in many of the numbers that incorporates existing translations plus her own adaptations. The joy and heartbreak of these timeless tunes is an emotional roller coaster guaranteed to go straight to your heart. Gay Marshall made her Broadway debut as Diana Morales in A Chorus Line.Her one woman show "Piaf : La Vie l’Amour" played in the States and took her to Paris where she played Grizabella in the original French production of "Cats". Living in Europe inspired her to write "If I Were Me", a comedy that she performed in Paris and took to the Edinburgh Festival where it was voted #2 on the Fringe. Most recently here in the States, she did "Jacques Brel" at Capital Rep, Denise in both Goodspeed, the York Theater and Paper Mill’s productions of "The Baker’s Wife" and the Off Broadway production of "Jacques Brel" during which she received a nomination for the Drama League’s "Distinguished Performance Award", and named a "Top Ten Divas" by Playbill.

Nick Rosen “Into the Sky” 23 year old multi-instrumentalist, composer Nick Rosen is on a mission to "inspire joy and hope" the world over, with his unique sound and vision. He's been realizing his musical dreams since he first picked up the electric bass at the age of 13. Now an accomplished upright and electric bassist, guitarist, pianist, and natural at most instruments he takes a liking to, Rosen has completed the enlightening journey of writing, arranging and Executive Producing his debut CD, Into the Sky. Before receiving his BFA from California Institute of the Arts, with a double major in classical and jazz bass, in May, 2007, (under the mentorship of Darek Oles, Peter Rofe and Charlie Haden,) Rosen had already been playing around Los Angeles with jazz luminaries such as bassist Henry Grimes, reedsman Bennie Maupin and saxophonist Arthur Blythe, as well as experimental guitarist Nels Cline and multi-instrumentalist Wadada Leo Smith, among many others. He's played in a wide variety of rock, soul and jazz bands since his days at Oakwood High School, (where he is currently a bass teacher,) near his home town of Sherman Oaks, California. All the financing Rosen raised for his incredible soul-folk, orchestral-jazz record came from his work as a professional session player, and band leader. He's been a bassist for the T.V. show Fringe for the last 2 seasons, and just played on the score to Will Ferrell's feature film, Land of the Lost, for composer Michael Giacchino. Rosen also plays regularly with The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, Build An Ark, and other world renowned ensembles based in Los Angeles, including his own group The Nick Rosen Trio.

Nicholas King Nicolas King will be making his Metropolitan Room under the baton of Mike Renzi. Having done 3 Broadway shows by the time he was 12, King has performed in front of thrilled audiences since he was 4. From television commercials, to live performances, and memorable appearances on "The Tonight Show" & "The View", King is sure to pack a punch with his favorite songs from the Broadway stage and the Big Band Era.King got his Broadway debut at age 8 in Beauty & The Beast, and soon after was cast alongside Tom Selleck in A Thousand Clowns. Carol Burnett and Hal Prince noticed his performance in that production and cast him in their play Hollywood Arms. In 2006 Nicolas was approached by Liza Minnelli to perform with her as her opening act.  Nicolas is continuing to thrill crowds both on the east coast and west. As stated by Carol Burnett in the liner notes of his current album, "This kid is amazing!"

Jason Graae has starred on and off-Broadway in "A Grand Night For Singing", "Falsettos", "Stardust", "Snoopy!", "Do Black Patent Leather Shows Really Reflect Up?", "Forever Plaid", "Olympus on My Mind", "All in the Timing", "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh (Drama Desk Nomination- Best Actor in a Musical)" and many more. Jason Made his Metropolitan Opera House debut as featured vocalist in Twyla Tharp's "Everlast" with American Ballet Theatre. Jason has performed his one-man show all over the country, including Rainbow and Stars and Birdland in NYC, Caramoor Music Festival, Wolf Trap, Feinstein's in L.A., and The Plush Room in San Francisco, to name a few. He has received the New York Nightlife Award, 4 Bistros and was listed in TimeOut NY's Top 10 Cabaret shows of 2006.In Los Angeles, he just won his second L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award - the 2008 Joel Hirschorn Award for Oustanding Achievement in Musical Theatre. He won an Ovation Award for "Forbidden Broadway Y2KLA!", an Artistic Director's Achievement Award for "Fully Committed" and a Santa Barbara Indie Award for "High Button Shoes". Jason originated the role of "Houdini" in the L.A. production of "Ragtime" at the Shubert Theatre. Other L.A. credits include "Marcellus" in "The Music Man " at the Hollywood Bowl, many shows at Reprise!, and "Grand Hotel" and "The Grand Tour" at The Colony. Jason has recorded over forty CDs, including original cast albums, concerts, compilations, and his two solo CDs, "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile - Jason Graae Sings Charles Strouse", and "Jason Graae LIVE at The Cinegrill" (Fynsworth Alley). Pinky Winters and Richard Rodney Bennett Pinky Winters and Richard Rodney Bennett met in 1979 when Bennett was in Los Angeles for a movie project, and he attended one of Pinky's gigs. This led to a long friendship and a professional relationship over the years. They have performed through the U.S., and their enthusiasm for all things musical is contagious. Both share a love of the Great American Songbook and are always on the lookout for overlooked gems. Welcome to a friendly and inspiring evening with Bennett and Winters.
