Music Director Alan Gilbert will conduct the New York Philharmonic in the World Premiere of Franck Krawczyk's Apre?s, a Philharmonic commission resulting from The Marie-Jose?e Kravis Prize for New Music; Schumann's Cello Concerto, with Principal Cello Carter Brey as soloist; and Brahms's Symphony No. 2, Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, April 29 at 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, April 30 at 8:00 p.m.

The third movement of Apre?s is written in homage to Dutilleux. "Being one of those whom Mai?tre Henri Dutilleux honored with this prize is priceless to me," said Franck Krawczyk. "He kept a relationship to truth in everything he perceived. He wrote with the constant worry that it should sound true, which is what had probably kept him away from the sirens of a certain easy modernity, in favor of a staggering dive into his own personal language."

Mr. Krawczyk has said that he feels that the work that follows his on the program, Schumann's Cello Concerto, captures some essence of his own music. The program closes with Symphony No. 2 by Brahms, Schumann's prote?ge?.

Principal Cello Carter Brey will again perform Schumann's Cello Concerto with the Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert on the CALIFORNIA 2016 tour the following week. The New York Times wrote that Mr. Brey "played with beauty and command" in his most recent solo appearance, in Beethoven's Triple Concerto led by Alan Gilbert in June 2014.
