Windmill Theatre has landed six Helpmann Award nominations for its 2012 production SCHOOL DANCE. The nominations include Jonathon Oxlade for Best Scenic Design, Luke Smiles for Best Sound Design, RoseMary Myers for Best Direction of a Play, Amber McMahon for Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Play, Matthew Whittet for Best New Australian Work and SCHOOL DANCE for Best Presentation for Children.

Windmill Theatre's Artistic Director and Director of SCHOOL DANCE, RoseMary Myers today said, "This is such fantastic recognition for the show and the company.

I am thrilled for the team and in particular Jonathon, Luke, Amber and Matthew who have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to the production," she said.

Set in the special kind of hell that is the school dance, the show follows three awkward teens Matthew, Luke and Jonathon on their hormone-fueled quest for social acceptability.

The nomination announcement comes less than two weeks ahead of the opening of the company's next offering, BIG BAD WOLF by Matthew Whittet. This new original work for audiences five and over is a hilarious, table-turning tale about a misunderstood wolf and an unlikely friendship with a descendant of Little Red Riding Hood, Heidi Hood. It is directed by Windmill's RoseMary Myers and designed by resident artist Jonathon Oxlade.

SCHOOL DANCE by Matthew Whittet

A sell-out when it premiered at the Adelaide Festival in 2012, SCHOOL DANCE mashes together some '80s gold (BMX heroics, Smurfs, power ballads) to create some gloriously goofy and - for those of us with long memories - achingly real comedy.

Directed by RoseMary Myers, the show stars writer Matthew Whittet, designer Jonathon Oxlade, composer Luke Smiles and Amber McMahon. Drawing a healthy dose of inspiration from the 1980s teen angst films of John Hughes, SCHOOL DANCE is a nostalgic and boisterous theatrical gem for all the dorks, misfits and wannabe rock gods out there.
