A battle between good and evil provides an identifiable opponent, but sometimes the enemy is more ambiguous. Author Matthew Reynolds tackles this universal concept and infuses a mystical component in his novel "A World on the Island's Edge: Book 1 of the Golden Dolphin."

"A World on the Island's Edge" chronicles the unyielding connection between 12-year old Andi Johnston and a magical dolphin named Lux. For two years, Andi has hidden a family secret: her grandmother suffers from dementia. Hidden in a cavern under her home, Andi finds Lux, a creature of supernatural and unexplainable powers, who temporarily heals Andi's grandmother and relieves her symptoms.

"A World on the Island's Edge is driven by relationships and a desire to care for those you love, especially those that are special or different," Reynolds said. "The bond between Andi, her loved ones and Lux is strong enough to battle the dangers to her family but at what cost?"

The danger mounts for the pair as a mysterious ship appears across the bay and a monstrous creature threatens to use Lux as a means to escape its prison. In the end, Andi and her twin brother, Artie, must race against time to save Lux, their family and their own lives.

"A World on the Island's Edge is a hopeful and satisfying book about grief and coming of age, in which both children and adults are often forced to confront hardships and changes beyond what they think is possible," Natasha Gilmore, reviewer at Clarion Reviews, said.

"The author…provides rich sensory detail. May well compel young readers craving more adventures with the twins and their magicAl Golden dolphin to seek out book two."
