This is a truly fantastic interview with the wonderful Tony Sheldon who is Bernadette in 'Priscilla' at the Palace.
He comes over as such a lovely, warm person with a true passion for the theatre and in particular, Australian theatre.
Its a fascinating 15 minutes with someone who is so obviously in love with the profession he's in.
I think London should feel honored to have such a talent on its stage and long may he be here. At least its a 99.9% cert that you'll see the leading man when you see 'Priscilla' as he talks about the Australian tradition of never going off or taking holidays. He's performed the show nearly 900 times and only missed one single performance!
Thats something English performers could learn more of for a start!
Welcome Tony.

Lovely interview. It's interesting that he is so protective of the role of Bernadette. I was singing the praises of Priscilla to some friends in NYC last week. They were asking who played the 'Terence Stamp role' and if it might transfer to Broadway. Fingers crossed it does and, if so, hopefully Mr Sheldon will get the chance to make his Broadway debut if he so desires.

He's a great ambassador for Australian theatre - he certainly helped to open my eyes to some of the history and tradition which wasn't previously on my radar.

I now refer to him as Lord Tony of Sheldon. re: Bernadette Reveals All! -The Wonderful Tony Sheldon
Seen some shows in my time....

What a beautiful interview.
Tony is just such a classy guy and an exceptional talent.
My only fear is that he is so good that I doubt we will see him back here in OZ anytime soon.

Sorry Claire, but I'm more than happy with that.
lol.
There is a whole wealth of stuff he can do here for many a year to come. Sadly he seems truly dedicated to his country and the theatre scene there, but for now he's more than welcome for the run of 'Priscilla'.

...and he can bring this lady with him ANY time!

Of course many years ago in Australia the two of them did a show called MADONNA AND CHILD, chock full of showtunes well known and not so well known. Perhaps this could be revived as a late night show in London?

Tony is an incredible talent and a testament to the Aussie theatre industry. I would love to see him opposite Phillip Quast in La Cage (after Roger Allam leaves), but I fear he wouldn't want to be type cast in transexual/drag roles. I think his Zaza would have a great wisdom and worldliness, as well as the flamboyant pizazz that the role requires.

I totally agree that it would never happen in a million years, but one is allowed to imagine right?

Being 3rd or 4th company -I don't think so. They wouldn't dare insult him by asking!

Possible Broadway transfer?

Random question: anyone know if he going to travel with Priscilla to Toronto when it opens there in October?

That photo is from Melbourne 2004. Stress and strain of the show turned his hair grey overnight so that by the time the show got to Sydney in 2005 he had the grey hair we currently know. (Not really I made that up...the photo is from Melbourne 2004 however).

Apparently Sheldon let his hair grow out while THE PRODUCERS was on a six week hiatus and requested to play the rest of the tour with his own natural grey hair. The producers of THE PRODUCERS were so worried that he wouldn't look like a carbon copy of Gary Beach that they said "But will you still be funny?"

I'd heard that hair colour can do that. Amazing really.
