West End MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Supports Youth Music Charity

By:

The acclaimed West End musical MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET will mark the anniversary of a momentous event in music history, when Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis played together for the first and only time in their careers, by supporting the national charity YOUTH MUSIC with a week-long bucket collection from 3 December 2011.

Inspired by the actual recording session made on Tuesday 4 December 1956, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET recreates the legendary meeting masterminded by Sun Records' founder Sam Phillips, who discovered all four of the groundbreaking musicians and helped shape popular music as we know it.
Dedicating the raised funds to the YOUTH MUSIC Mentors scheme, the ecstatic and engaging musical draws from over 20 of the greatest songs ever written – including Blue Suede Shoes, I Walk The Line, Hound Dog and Great Balls of Fire – and helps illustrate how rock 'n' roll influenced and defined a generation and how music continues to affect the way we feel, think and act, providing a unique form of communication that can motivate and inspire us all.

The YOUTH MUSIC Mentors scheme uses music as the common ground and shared interest to develop a relationship with some of the most disadvantaged young people across the country in order to support them to make significant changes in knowledge and behaviour. Through this process, the music mentor coaches the individual in order to achieve on a musical and social level. The mentoring process includes sourcing and providing signposting and next steps for mentees at its heart, ensuring that impact is sustained beyond the relationship itself.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET will end its year long run at the Noel Coward Theatre, London on Saturday 14 January 2012. Productions are also currently playing in New York, Chicago and on tour across North America.
