Review: THERE’S A MONSTER IN YOUR SHOW, artsdepot
Meaningful messages wrapped in family fun
Tom Fletcher’s much loved Who’s in Your Book? series makes a joyful leap from page to stage in There’s a Monster in Your Show, a lively and engaging family musical which celebrates imagination, friendship and the importance of working together.
Before the action begins, the audience is warmly welcomed into the world of the show through charming pre show interaction from the cast. Laura McEwen’s colourful set, carefully labelled as “Charlie’s Show”, is filled with bright boxes and playful details which immediately spark curiosity and excitement among young theatre goers.
The production opens with a delightful recorded welcome from author Tom Fletcher, setting the tone for an adventure fuelled by creativity. The character of Charlie explains that imagination is like “dreaming with your eyes open”, a simple yet effective message that resonates throughout the performance. The performers are eager to present their prepared show, but their plans are quickly disrupted when Monster arrives determined to take centre stage. Soon Dragon, Alien and Unicorn join the fun, transforming the production into a whirlwind of giggling, chaos and audience participation.

Director Miranda Larson keeps the pace energetic throughout the fifty minute running time, ensuring younger audience members remain engaged. Interactive moments are woven seamlessly into the action, with children enthusiastically encouraged to play air guitars and imaginary instruments, becoming active participants in the storytelling, rather than passive observers.
The puppetry is a particular highlight. Keith Frederick’s vibrant creations are full of personality and charm, while the performers bring them to life with skill and infectious enthusiasm. Duncan Taylor’s Monster is especially memorable, displaying a mischievous streak that delights the audience. His refusal to return to his book creates worry for Charlie, whose growing anxiety is cleverly visualised through animated worry gremlins appearing on screens around the stage. It is an inventive theatrical device that helps younger viewers understand overwhelming feelings in an accessible and relatable way.
The cast work cohesively throughout. Marcus Jones brings warmth and sincerity to Charlie, making his worries and frustrations easy to understand. Eloise Hare delivers energetic performances as Alex while skilfully operating both Unicorn and Dragon. Jenny Trapp stands out with excellent vocals, particularly during a soaring musical number about flying, which showcases both her singing ability and Stage Presence. Together the company maintain an infectious sense of fun that keeps the audience energised.
Tom Fletcher, Barry Bignold and Miranda Larson’s original songs add variety to the production, complementing Zoe Bourn’s adaptation of the popular books. Beneath the laughter and silliness lies a thoughtful exploration of anxiety, self belief and teamwork. As Charlie learns that he cannot push his show ahead without help.
Embracing music, laughter, puppetry and participation, There’s a Monster in Your Show is an accessible introduction to live theatre for younger audiences. The messages about managing worries and finding strength through friendship, give the production a meaningful emotional core via a colourful, engaging and heart warming theatrical adventure.
