A massive power cut in Upper Street, Islington last night forced the cast of HMS Pinafore at London's Little Opera House at the king's Head Theatre to perform the first preview entirely by candle light.

Power cut came at 6.30pm for 5 hours.

The show was lit entirely by 20 candles on chairs with kitchen foil to reflect light

The audience of 100 all stayed - and cheered on the cast. Director of show, John Savournin said atmosphere was "electric" (pun intended)

"This ended up with a really authentic performance as Gilbert & Sullivan used to be performed by gaslight. People said they saw the show in a new light."
